Why Buy Me?

  • Flowers are attractive to wildlife
  • Masses of pink flowers
  • sun or part shade

Growing Conditions

Light:
Full sun to light shade. Thrives in full sun for the best flowering and foliage colour, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In shaded areas, flowering may be reduced, and the plant may become leggy.

Soil:
Well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Prefers loamy, sandy, or clay-based soils with good drainage. Tolerates slightly acidic to neutral pH but can adapt to a wide range of soil types, as long as they are not waterlogged.

Exposure:
Suitable for both sheltered and exposed locations. Hardy in USDA zones 4–8 (UK H5). It can tolerate various climates and soil types but may require some protection from harsh winter winds in colder regions.

Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Once established, it is somewhat drought-tolerant, but regular watering during dry spells will ensure healthy growth and abundant flowering. Young plants require consistent moisture during their first growing season.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Best planted in early spring or autumn, avoiding extreme temperatures. Container-grown plants can be planted throughout the growing season as long as there is adequate watering.

Spacing:
Space 90–120 cm (3–4 feet) apart. Grows to a mature size of about 1–1.2 m (3–4 feet) tall and wide, making it a compact variety that works well in smaller spaces or as a low hedge.

Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, water during dry spells. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering.

Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch annually in spring to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Prune after flowering, removing spent blooms to encourage more blooms the following season. Light pruning may be done to maintain a tidy shape, but avoid hard pruning, which could reduce next year's flowers.

Propagation:
Propagate by softwood cuttings taken in late spring or early summer. Can also be propagated by layering or from seed, though softwood cuttings are the most reliable method.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
In late spring to early summer (May–June), Pink Poppet Weigela produces an abundance of small, funnel-shaped pink flowers that cover the plant, creating a cheerful, vibrant display. The flowers are highly attractive to bees and hummingbirds.

Summer:
The plant continues to provide attractive green foliage throughout summer. The flowers may reappear in late summer or early fall, though the initial bloom is the most prolific.

Autumn:
Foliage remains attractive into autumn, with the leaves sometimes taking on a slight bronze tint. Flowering generally fades in the fall, but the compact form of the plant adds structure to the landscape.

Winter:
Deciduous. Loses its leaves in winter, but retains a neat, rounded structure. Can be pruned during dormancy to shape the plant.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds due to its abundant pink flowers, which are rich in nectar. The dense foliage provides shelter for small birds and insects. While not a significant food source for mammals, it supports pollinators.

Garden Use:
Ideal for small gardens, mixed borders, or as a specimen shrub. Its compact size makes it perfect for containers, front borders, or as a low hedge. Great for adding vibrant colour to garden beds, especially in cottage, wildlife, or low-maintenance gardens.

Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other sun-loving shrubs like Spiraea, Abelia, and Potentilla, as well as perennials like Salvia, Geranium, Lavender, and Daylilies. The vibrant pink flowers contrast beautifully with purple-leaved or silver-foliaged plants, creating an eye-catching combination.
