Growing Conditions
Light:
Partial to full shade. Tolerates deep shade and performs well in low-light areas. Can adapt to some morning sun but avoid strong afternoon sun, especially in warmer climates.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Avoid waterlogged or very dry soils.
Exposure:
Best in a sheltered position, such as against a wall or under tree cover. Protect from harsh, drying winds and exposed sites.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Drought-tolerant once established, but prefers consistently moist soil—do not allow it to dry out completely, especially in summer.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in early spring or autumn when soil is workable and temperatures are mild.
Spacing:
Space 60–90 cm (2–3 feet) apart depending on intended use (e.g., low hedge, mass planting, or specimen).
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first season. Feed annually in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch annually with compost, leaf mould, or bark to retain moisture and enrich soil. Prune lightly after flowering to shape and remove damaged or crossing stems.
Propagation:
Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings in late summer or by division in early spring. Can also be grown from seed, though slow to germinate.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Glossy evergreen foliage continues to provide structure; late winter/early spring berries may still persist.
Summer:
Evergreen foliage remains lush and glossy, adding texture and form to shady areas.
Autumn:
Foliage remains dense and dark green. Often used as a background plant during autumn display.
Winter:
Highly fragrant, creamy-white flowers bloom from December to February. Tiny flowers are inconspicuous but fill the air with a sweet, honey-like scent. Followed by shiny black berries.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Fragrant flowers attract early pollinators, including bees emerging in mild winter spells. Berries are eaten by birds. Dense foliage provides year-round cover for small garden wildlife.
Garden Use:
Ideal for shade gardens, foundation plantings, underplanting of trees and shrubs, shaded borders, and low informal hedges. Excellent for small gardens, urban courtyards, and containers in shaded areas.
Companion Plants:
Combines beautifully with other shade-loving plants such as Helleborus, Ferns, Epimedium, Heuchera, Pulmonaria, and Hosta. Also pairs well with early spring bulbs like Galanthus (snowdrops) and Eranthis
