Growing Conditions
Light:
Prefers full sun for optimal flowering and compact growth. Tolerates very light shade, but flowering will be reduced.
Soil:
Thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soils. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils.
Exposure:
Grows best in sheltered positions, protected from cold winds. Hardy in milder parts of the UK. May need winter protection or mulching in colder areas.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderately to highly drought-tolerant once established. Performs well in dry, sunny borders. Water during extended dry periods to encourage continuous flowering.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Best planted in late spring after the risk of frost has passed or in early autumn in warmer regions.
Spacing:
Space plants approximately 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart. Mature height typically reaches 60–75 cm (24–30 inches) with a similar spread.
Watering & Fertilisation:
Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, needs only occasional watering. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring and again midseason to promote prolonged blooming.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring with organic matter to retain moisture and enrich the soil. Lightly prune in early spring to shape and remove frost damage. Deadhead regularly to extend flowering. In colder areas, delay hard pruning until after the last frost.
Propagation:
Propagate by softwood cuttings in late spring or early summer.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Foliage emerges and flowering begins by late spring in warmer areas.
Summer:
Produces vibrant deep crimson-red flowers continuously from early summer through to autumn. Dark stems and calyces add contrast and visual depth.
Autumn:
Continues blooming until the first frost. Foliage may remain green well into autumn in mild climates.
Winter:
Semi-evergreen in sheltered areas. May die back completely in colder regions. Protect root zone with mulch in winter.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Very attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbird hawk-moths. An excellent nectar plant with a long flowering season.
Garden Use:
Ideal for sunny borders, Mediterranean-style gardens, containers, and wildlife-friendly gardens. Brings intense colour and long-lasting interest.
