Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun for best flowering. Can tolerate light shade, but flowering may be reduced.
Soil:
Well-drained soil is essential. Thrives in moderately fertile to poor soils. Tolerates a range of pH levels (neutral to slightly alkaline). Performs well in sandy or gravelly soils.
Exposure:
Suitable for both exposed and sheltered sites. Very hardy and tolerant of wind and urban pollution.
Drought Tolerance:
High once established. Excellent performance in dry conditions; does not like waterlogged soil.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn when temperatures are cooler and moisture is more consistent.
Spacing:
Space plants 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart to allow for natural spreading and airflow.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly until established. After that, water only during prolonged dry periods. Avoid rich fertilization; too much nitrogen can lead to leggy growth. A light compost mulch in spring is often sufficient.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in early spring to suppress weeds and conserve moisture. Cut back spent flower spikes in midsummer to encourage a second flush of blooms. Prune hard in late autumn or early spring to maintain shape and vigor.
Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring or autumn. Can also be grown from softwood cuttings in spring.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Foliage emerges grey-green and aromatic. Plants begin forming mounds and may start to flower in late spring.
Summer:
Long spikes of soft lavender-blue flowers bloom profusely from late spring into midsummer. Shearing back after the first bloom encourages repeat flowering.
Autumn:
A second flush of flowers may appear if deadheaded. Foliage may remain attractive until frost.
Winter:
Dies back to ground level in colder climates. Very hardy and frost-tolerant.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Cats are also often drawn to the foliage, though less intensely than to common catnip.
Garden Use:
Ideal for edging, borders, rock gardens, herb gardens, and cottage-style plantings. Works well in mass plantings or as a soft, flowering ground cover. Excellent for dry, sunny sites and low-maintenance gardens.
Companion Plants:
Pairs beautifully with roses, lavender, salvia, echinacea, ornamental grasses, and coreopsis.
