Growing Conditions
Light:
Thrives in partial to full shade. Tolerates full sun if soil remains moist, but best performance is in dappled or light shade.
Soil:
Prefers moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Adapts to a variety of soil types including clay, loam, or sandy soils. Suitable for acid, neutral, or alkaline conditions.
Exposure:
Performs well in sheltered or semi-exposed spots. Wind-tolerant and hardy in a range of garden conditions.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Reasonably drought-tolerant once established, though consistent moisture is beneficial during dry spells.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in autumn or spring when soil is moist and workable. Container-grown specimens can be planted year-round with adequate watering.
Spacing:
Allow 1.5–2 meters (5–6.5 feet) between plants to accommodate mature size and promote good airflow.
Watering:
Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, only water during prolonged dry periods.
Fertilization:
Feed with a general-purpose fertilizer in early spring. An annual mulch of compost or leaf mould helps enrich the soil.
Mulching:
Apply mulch in spring to conserve moisture, improve soil, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch clear of the crown.
Pruning:
Little pruning required. After flowering, prune spent flower stems back to just above a leaf joint to encourage bushier growth. Remove any dead or damaged stems.
Propagation:
Can be propagated from semi-ripe cuttings in summer. Seed propagation is possible but slow and variable.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
New foliage emerges with bronzy or reddish tones before maturing to deep green.
Summer:
Evergreen foliage remains attractive and architectural; plant builds flower buds for winter display.
Autumn:
Buds swell and prepare to bloom; dark green spiny leaves provide excellent winter structure.
Winter:
Produces upright racemes of fragrant, bright yellow flowers from November to February, often earlier than other Mahonias. Provides a cheerful burst of colour in the winter garden.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Highly attractive to bees and other pollinators during winter flowering. Birds are drawn to the black-blue berries that follow the flowers.
Garden Use:
Excellent for woodland gardens, shady borders, or as a stand-alone specimen. Also useful for creating structure, screening, or as an informal hedge.
Companion Plants:
Pairs beautifully with hellebores, snowdrops, ferns, Sarcococca, Skimmia, and evergreen grasses. Great underplanting for larger trees or shrubs.
