Growing Conditions
Light:
Grows well in full sun to partial shade. Brightest foliage colour occurs in full sun, but the plant is tolerant of shade, making it suitable for woodland edges.
Soil:
Prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Tolerates a wide range of soil types, including loam, clay, and sandy soils. Grows well in neutral to slightly acidic pH.
Exposure:
Performs well in sheltered or moderately exposed locations. Tolerates coastal winds and urban pollution. Protect from severe cold winds in exposed sites.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate once established. Water during extended dry spells, especially in hot summers.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn, when conditions are mild and soil is moist.
Spacing:
Space 1.5–2 metres (5–6.5 feet) apart when planting for hedging or as part of a mixed border. Ultimate height can reach 4–6 metres (13–20 feet) if unpruned.
Watering:
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once mature, it only needs watering during prolonged drought.
Fertilization:
Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth, particularly in nutrient-poor soils.
Mulching:
Mulch in spring with organic matter like bark or compost to conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds.
Pruning:
Minimal pruning needed. Prune in late winter or early spring to shape or control size. Can be clipped for formal hedging or topiary.
Propagation:
Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings in summer or by grafting.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Produces small white flowers in late spring (May–June), which are attractive to pollinators but not showy.
Summer:
Foliage is glossy dark green with bright yellow central variegation, giving a vibrant appearance throughout the season.
Autumn:
If a male holly is nearby, red berries may appear and persist into winter (this cultivar is female, but not reliably self-fertile).
Winter:
Evergreen—retains foliage year-round. Bold, variegated leaves and occasional red berries provide excellent winter interest.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Flowers attract bees and other pollinators. If berries are present, they provide food for birds such as thrushes and blackbirds. Dense foliage offers shelter and nesting sites.
Garden Use:
Excellent for hedging, screening, topiary, and specimen planting. A great choice for winter gardens, formal borders, or foundation planting due to its year-round interest.
Companion Plants:
Works well with Skimmia, Camellia, Mahonia, Ferns, and shade-tolerant perennials. Contrasts beautifully with silver or purple-leaved evergreens like Pittosporum or Heuchera.
