Growing Conditions

Light:
Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Full sun encourages the best flowering and strong, upright stems. In warmer climates, some afternoon shade can prevent leaf scorch.

Soil:
Prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Tolerates a wide range of soil types (loam, sandy, clay), but grows best in slightly acidic to neutral pH.

Exposure:
Grows well in moderately exposed or sheltered locations. More cold- and wind-tolerant than bigleaf hydrangeas (H. macrophylla).

Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Needs regular watering during dry spells, particularly while establishing. More drought-tolerant once mature than other hydrangea species.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn, allowing the root system to establish before extreme temperatures arrive.

Spacing:
Allow 1.2–1.5 metres (4–5 feet) between plants for mature spread and airflow.

Watering:
Water deeply and consistently, especially during the first year and hot, dry weather. Keep soil evenly moist, but not soggy.

Fertilization:
Feed with a balanced fertilizer (e.g. 10-10-10) in early spring. Too much nitrogen can encourage leafy growth over flowers.

Mulching:
Mulch in spring with organic material (compost, bark, or leaf mould) to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

Pruning:
Flowers on new wood, so prune hard in late winter or early spring. Cut back stems to 30–50 cm (1–1.5 ft) to promote larger flower heads and a tidy form.

Propagation:
Propagate by softwood cuttings in late spring or semi-ripe cuttings in summer.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Foliage emerges fresh and green, forming a neat shrub shape.

Summer:
Produces dense, cone-shaped flower heads from mid to late summer (July–August). Blooms start creamy white, aging to soft pink or light tan as the season progresses.

Autumn:
Flowers fade to buff or pinkish-brown tones; foliage may turn yellow before dropping.

Winter:
Deciduous. Dried flower heads and strong stems provide winter structure if left uncut.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Attracts pollinators including bees and butterflies when in bloom.

Garden Use:
Excellent for borders, foundation plantings, hedges, and containers. Compact size and tidy form make it ideal for small gardens, urban spaces, or formal beds.

Companion Plants:
Pairs well with Salvia, Sedum, Rudbeckia, Echinacea, Miscanthus, and Hosta. Also complements other hydrangeas and ornamental grasses in mixed borders.
