Growing Conditions
Light:
Prefers partial shade—morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal. In cooler climates, it can tolerate more sun, but too much heat or direct sun may scorch the leaves.
Soil:
Grows best in moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soils for rich pink blooms. Soil pH can influence bloom colour—more alkaline enhances pink tones, while acidic soils may cause slight purplish hues.
Exposure:
Ideal in sheltered areas protected from harsh winds and late spring frosts, which can damage developing flower buds.
Drought Tolerance:
Low. Needs consistent moisture, especially during hot or dry periods. Susceptible to wilting if left too dry.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn when the weather is mild and soil is moist, allowing the plant to establish strong roots.
Spacing:
Space 1.2–1.5 metres (4–5 feet) apart to allow for mature spread and good airflow.
Watering:
Keep soil evenly moist, especially during hot weather or while the plant is establishing. Avoid waterlogging.
Fertilization:
Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. A second light feeding in midsummer can support continued flowering.
Mulching:
Apply mulch in spring using organic material (e.g., compost or bark). Helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce weeds.
Pruning:
Blooms on old wood. Prune lightly after flowering to remove spent blooms and tidy shape. Avoid heavy pruning, which can reduce next year’s flowers.
Propagation:
Propagate by softwood cuttings in late spring or semi-ripe cuttings in summer. Rooting is usually reliable under moist, warm conditions.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Dark green foliage emerges. Flower buds begin developing on last season’s growth.
Summer:
Produces large, rounded mop-head blooms in soft to vibrant pink shades, typically flowering from June through August. A classic garden highlight.
Autumn:
Blooms fade to vintage pink or green hues. Foliage may turn yellow or reddish before falling.
Winter:
Deciduous. Bare stems can be left with dried flower heads for seasonal interest and protection of new buds.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, especially to fertile inner florets if present.
Garden Use:
Ideal for borders, cottage gardens, foundation plantings, or as a specimen shrub. Works well in large containers on patios or shaded terraces.
Companion Plants:
Pairs beautifully with Hosta, Ferns, Heuchera, Astilbe, Japanese Anemones, and woodland perennials. Also combines well with other hydrangeas and Camellia in part-shade settings.
