    • Masses of showy flower heads
    • Easy to grow in most soils

    Growing Conditions

    Light:
Thrives in partial shade—ideally with morning sun and afternoon shade. Can tolerate more sun in cooler climates but benefits from protection against hot afternoon rays.

    Soil:
Prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. Best flower colour is achieved in neutral to slightly acidic soils. Less affected by pH than coloured varieties but may show a subtle pink or green tint in alkaline conditions.

    Exposure:
Grows best in sheltered positions, protected from harsh winds and late spring frosts. Ideal for woodland edges or shaded borders.

    Drought Tolerance:
Low. Requires consistent moisture, especially in dry weather. Not drought-tolerant—wilts quickly if the soil is too dry.

    Cultivation & Care

    Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn when the soil is warm and moist, allowing roots to establish before winter or summer extremes.

    Spacing:
Allow 1.2–1.5 metres (4–5 feet) between plants to accommodate mature spread and promote airflow.

    Watering:
Water deeply and regularly during the growing season. Keep soil evenly moist, especially in hot, dry periods.

    Fertilization:
Apply a balanced fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) in early spring. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can reduce flowering and promote leafy growth.

    Mulching:
Mulch annually in spring with compost, leaf mould, or bark to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch clear of stems to prevent rot.

    Pruning:
Blooms on old wood. Prune lightly after flowering to remove spent blooms and dead stems. Avoid hard pruning in spring or winter to preserve next season’s buds.

    Propagation:
Propagate by softwood cuttings in late spring or semi-ripe cuttings in summer.

    Seasonal Interest

    Spring:
Produces lush, dark green foliage. Buds develop on old wood.

    Summer:
Large, rounded mop-head flowers open from June to August, starting pure white, sometimes developing pink or greenish tints as they age.

    Autumn:
Flowers fade attractively to muted tones; foliage may take on soft yellow hues before dropping.

    Winter:
Deciduous. Dried flower heads add winter structure and protect developing buds underneath.

    Wildlife & Garden Use

    Wildlife:
Provides nectar for bees and butterflies during the flowering season. Offers shelter for insects among dense foliage.

    Garden Use:
Excellent in mixed borders, shaded gardens, woodland edges, and foundation plantings. Its refined, classic appearance also suits formal gardens and containers (if large enough).

    Companion Plants:
Pairs well with shade-lovers like Hosta, Ferns, Heuchera, Astilbe, Brunnera, and Japanese Anemones. Complements other hydrangeas and acid-loving shrubs like Camellia and Rhododendron
