Growing Conditions
Light:
Prefers full sun to partial shade. In cooler climates, full sun encourages stronger stems and more prolific blooms. In warmer regions, light afternoon shade helps prevent stress.
Soil:
Thrives in moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Tolerates a range of soils (loamy, sandy, or clay) but performs best in neutral to slightly acidic soil.
Exposure:
Grows well in sheltered or moderately exposed locations. More tolerant of wind and cold than most other hydrangeas.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Needs regular watering, especially during hot, dry periods and while establishing. More drought-tolerant than Hydrangea macrophylla once mature.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn, allowing roots to establish before flowering or winter dormancy.
Spacing:
Space plants 1.5–2 metres (5–6.5 feet) apart to accommodate mature spread and promote good air circulation.
Watering:
Water deeply and regularly, especially during summer and the first year after planting. Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy.
Fertilization:
Feed in early spring with a balanced fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) to support strong growth and flowering. Avoid high nitrogen, which can reduce blooms.
Mulching:
Apply a 5–8 cm (2–3 inch) mulch layer in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Organic compost or bark mulch is ideal.
Pruning:
Blooms on new wood. Prune hard in late winter or early spring, cutting back stems to a strong pair of buds about 30–50 cm (1–1.5 feet) above ground. Encourages larger flowers and sturdier stems.
Propagation:
Propagate by softwood cuttings in late spring or semi-ripe cuttings in summer.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Fresh green foliage emerges. Strong stems develop for summer blooms.
Summer:
Large, conical panicles of creamy white flowers appear from mid to late summer (July–September). One of the largest-flowered panicle hydrangeas.
Autumn:
Flowers often age to soft pink or blush tones before fading to tan. Foliage may turn yellow or bronze, adding late-season interest.
Winter:
Deciduous. Dried flower heads can be left for winter structure and ornamental interest.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Offers habitat for beneficial insects.
Garden Use:
Excellent for mixed borders, specimen planting, hedges, and cottage gardens. Strong architectural form makes it suitable for formal or modern landscapes. Can be grown in large containers.
Companion Plants:
Combines well with late-flowering perennials and grasses such as Rudbeckia, Echinacea, Sedum, Miscanthus, and Calamagrostis. Pairs beautifully with other hydrangeas for layered interest.
