Why Buy Me?

  • Summer flowering
  • Masses of showy flower heads
  • Easy to grow in most soils

Growing Conditions

Light:
Prefers partial shade, especially in hotter climates. Morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal. In cooler regions, it can tolerate more direct sunlight.

Soil:
Thrives in moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Best in slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 5.5–7). The flower colour is less pH-dependent than some other hydrangeas but may be slightly affected (pink in neutral to alkaline soils, bluish in more acidic conditions).

Exposure:
Sheltered sites are ideal, especially from cold, drying winds and strong afternoon sun. Protection from late spring frosts helps preserve buds and flowers.

Drought Tolerance:
Low to moderate. Needs consistent moisture during the growing season, especially in dry spells. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Plant in early spring or early autumn to allow roots to establish before the stress of summer heat or winter cold.

Spacing:
Space 1.2–1.5 metres (4–5 feet) apart to allow for mature spread and airflow.

Watering:
Water deeply and regularly, particularly during dry spells. Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy.

Fertilization:
Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. A second, lighter feeding after flowering can support healthy growth. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which may reduce flowering.

Mulching:
Apply a 5–8 cm (2–3 inch) layer of organic mulch in spring to help retain moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch away from the stems.

Pruning:
Prune lightly after flowering to remove spent blooms and maintain shape. Blooms on old wood—avoid hard pruning in spring or winter, or you may remove the following season’s flower buds.

Propagation:
Propagate by softwood cuttings in early summer or semi-ripe cuttings later in the season.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
New foliage emerges, with broad, rich green leaves that create a lush, leafy backdrop.

Summer:
Produces large, flat-topped lacecap flowers in soft pink shades from June to August. Outer sterile florets are pink with central fertile flowers attracting pollinators.

Autumn:
Flowers often age to muted tones (dusky pink or greenish hues). Leaves may take on autumn tints depending on climate.

Winter:
Deciduous. Loses leaves in winter, but dried flower heads can be left for structural interest and frost protection.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
The central fertile florets in the lacecap flower heads attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Offers late-season nectar.

Garden Use:
Ideal for borders, woodland gardens, cottage-style plantings, and shaded areas. Works well in large containers or as a feature shrub in mixed borders. Good for adding structure and summer colour.

Companion Plants:
Pairs beautifully with Hosta, Ferns, Astilbe, Heuchera, and Japanese Anemones. Combines well with other shade-loving shrubs like Pieris or Azaleas
