Growing Conditions

Light:
Grows best in full sun to partial shade. Full sun promotes compact growth and maximizes flowering. In partial shade, flowering may be lighter, but foliage remains healthy.

Soil:
Prefers moist but well-drained soil. Tolerates a range of soil types—loam, sandy, or chalky—provided they’re not waterlogged. Ideal pH is neutral to slightly acidic.

Exposure:
Thrives in sheltered positions. Protect from cold, drying winds and hard frosts. Suitable for mild coastal regions and urban gardens.

Drought Tolerance:
Moderate once established. Requires regular watering during dry spells in the first year. Mature plants tolerate occasional drought but benefit from watering in prolonged dry weather.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn to give roots time to establish in mild, moist conditions.

Spacing:
Space 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart. Forms a compact, rounded shrub ideal for front-of-border or container planting.

Watering:
Keep evenly moist during the first growing season. Water during dry periods, especially in summer, to support flowering and healthy foliage.

Fertilization:
Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring. Avoid excessive fertilization, which may lead to leggy growth.

Mulching:
Apply a light mulch in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Use bark, compost, or leaf mould, keeping mulch away from stems.

Pruning:
Lightly trim after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushiness. Do not cut into old wood, as it may not regrow well.

Propagation:
Propagate by softwood cuttings in late spring or semi-ripe cuttings in summer. Rooting is typically quick and reliable under warm, moist conditions.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Fresh green foliage emerges, developing into lush, bushy growth. Evergreen leaves maintain year-round structure.

Summer:
Blooms begin to appear in midsummer—delicate, blush-pink to pale mauve flower spikes add soft colour to borders and containers.

Autumn:
Flowering may continue into early autumn. Foliage remains bright and attractive as other plants begin to fade.

Winter:
Evergreen. Holds its dense, compact form and glossy foliage, providing winter interest. May require protection in harsh winters.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Flowers are attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Provides valuable nectar later in the season when other sources are scarce.

Garden Use:
Excellent for borders, edging, containers, and small gardens. Ideal for coastal and Mediterranean-style plantings. Compact form makes it perfect for front-of-border planting or patio pots.

Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other Hebes, Lavandula, Erigeron, Heuchera, and low grasses like Festuca glauca. Complements silver- or purple-foliaged plants for added contrast.
