Griselinia lit. Variegata
Why Buy Me?
- Great for hedging
- Dense growing
Growing Conditions
Light:
Thrives in full sun to partial shade. For optimal variegation, it prefers a sunnier position, but it can tolerate some shade. However, the colour of the variegated leaves may fade in low light conditions.
Soil:
Prefers well-drained, fertile soils, including loamy or sandy soil. Tolerates slightly acidic to neutral pH but does not thrive in alkaline or overly dry soils.
Exposure:
Grows well in sheltered or moderately exposed locations. Tolerates coastal conditions, including salt spray, making it a good choice for coastal gardens.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate drought tolerance once established. Requires regular watering during dry spells, especially during its first year. Tends to do well in moist but not waterlogged conditions.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn, allowing the plant to establish roots before summer heat or winter cold sets in.
Spacing:
Space plants 60–90 cm (2–3 feet) apart for a hedge or screen. If used as an individual specimen or small shrub, allow about 1–1.5 metres (3–5 feet) for natural spreading.
Watering:
Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, it requires less frequent watering but benefits from watering during dry periods to keep the foliage lush and vibrant.
Fertilization:
Feed in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to encourage healthy growth. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, as they may promote excessive foliage growth at the expense of the plant’s natural form.
Mulching:
Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, especially during dry spells. Mulch also helps suppress weeds.
Pruning:
Lightly prune in early spring after the risk of frost has passed to maintain shape and remove any dead or damaged growth. Can be trimmed back to maintain a compact, dense habit if needed.
Propagation:
Propagate by softwood cuttings taken in early summer. Can also be propagated by semi-ripe cuttings in late summer.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
New growth emerges as fresh, variegated leaves in shades of green with cream or yellow edges. The variegation is brightest in full sun.
Summer:
The variegated foliage remains vibrant, providing a colourful contrast to other plants. It forms a dense, bushy shrub or small tree, providing structure and year-round interest.
Autumn:
The variegated leaves continue to provide interest as they mature. Leaves may slightly fade in colour as the cooler weather sets in but remain attractive.
Winter:
Evergreen, so it retains its foliage throughout the winter months. The variegated leaves add a touch of brightness to the winter garden, especially in milder climates.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Attracts birds that feed on berries and provide shelter. However, it is not a major nectar source for pollinators.
Garden Use:
Ideal for hedges, screens, or as a specimen shrub. It also works well as a border plant, in mixed shrub borders, or in coastal gardens due to its salt tolerance. It makes a great choice for adding year-round interest and colour.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other evergreen plants such as boxwood, heuchera, or lavender for contrast. It also complements plants with silvery or purple foliage like lavender or rosemary, providing both texture and visual interest.
