Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Flowers most prolifically in a sunny position but benefits from light afternoon shade in hotter locations. Ideally receives at least 4–6 hours of sunlight daily.
Soil:
Moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Prefers humus-rich soils that retain moisture without becoming waterlogged. Tolerates a range of soil types, including loam and clay, provided drainage is good. Prefers neutral to slightly acidic conditions.
Exposure:
Suitable for sheltered or moderately exposed sites. Hardy and reliable throughout most of the UK and similar temperate climates.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate to low. Performs best with consistent soil moisture and may struggle in prolonged drought. Water regularly during dry spells, particularly in summer.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or autumn when temperatures are mild and soil conditions are favourable. Autumn planting allows roots to establish before the following growing season.
Spacing:
Space 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart. Plants typically reach 60–75 cm (24–30 inches) in height and spread around 45 cm (18 inches), forming attractive clumps.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during establishment and during dry weather. Apply a balanced fertiliser or garden compost in spring to support vigorous growth and abundant flowering. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely.
Mulching & Pruning:
Apply a mulch of compost or well-rotted organic matter in spring to conserve moisture and enrich the soil. Deadhead faded flowers regularly to encourage repeat blooming and prolong the display. Remove old foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges.
Propagation:
Propagate by division every 3–4 years in spring or autumn to maintain healthy, vigorous plants. Can also be grown from seed, although named cultivars may not come true from seed.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Fresh, slightly hairy green foliage emerges in neat clumps. Flower stems begin developing as temperatures rise.
Summer:
From late spring through midsummer (May to July), vibrant scarlet-red, semi-double flowers are borne on upright stems above the foliage. Regular deadheading often encourages additional blooms into late summer.
Autumn:
Foliage remains attractive and may continue providing ground cover until colder weather arrives. Plants gradually slow growth as temperatures decline.
Winter:
Semi-evergreen in mild areas but largely dormant in colder regions. Old foliage can be tidied in late winter before fresh growth appears.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Rich in nectar and highly attractive to bees, hoverflies, and other pollinating insects. Helps support garden biodiversity throughout its flowering season.
Garden Use:
Ideal for cottage gardens, mixed herbaceous borders, wildlife gardens, and informal planting schemes. Its vivid red flowers provide strong colour impact and work particularly well in the middle of borders. Also suitable for cutting gardens and fresh flower arrangements.
Companion Plants:
Pairs beautifully with Alchemilla mollis, Salvia, Nepeta, Geranium, Campanula, Iris, Achillea, and ornamental grasses. The fiery red blooms contrast especially well with blue, purple, yellow, and silver-leaved plants.
