Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Best flowering occurs with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Tolerates more shade than many flowering climbers, though reduced sunlight can lead to fewer flowers and more aggressive foliage growth.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Prefers loamy or sandy soils with neutral to slightly acidic pH. Tolerates poorer soils once established, but waterlogged or very dry soils should be avoided.
Exposure:
Thrives in sheltered or semi-exposed positions. Suitable for training along fences, trellises, walls, or over pergolas. Can also scramble through hedges or trees. Shelter from cold, drying winds is beneficial for best flower display.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Needs regular watering during dry spells, especially in the first 1–2 years. Once well-established, tolerates short droughts but performs better with consistent moisture during active growth and flowering.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn when soil is warm and workable. Autumn planting gives the roots time to establish before winter.
Spacing:
Space 1.5–2 m (5–6.5 ft) apart if planting multiple vines. Can grow 4.5–6 m (15–20 ft) or more when supported.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water well during dry periods and during the growing season. Apply a balanced general-purpose fertilizer in early spring. A second light feed after flowering may help encourage further blooming.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pruning Group 3:
Cut back hard in late winter or early spring to 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) above ground level. This encourages vigorous new shoots that carry the season’s flowers. Can also be trimmed lightly after flowering to maintain shape and size.
Propagation:
Easily propagated by semi-ripe cuttings in summer or by layering. A fast grower that roots readily where stems touch the soil.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
New shoots emerge rapidly. Foliage is glossy green and lush. Flower buds begin forming in late spring.
Summer:
Heavy flowering from early to late summer. Produces masses of creamy white flowers that mature to yellow, often both colours visible at once. Flowers are fragrant, especially in the evening.
Autumn:
Flowering may continue into early autumn in mild climates. Leaves often remain attractive until late in the season.
Winter:
Semi-evergreen to evergreen in mild climates. May lose leaves in colder areas but regrows quickly in spring. Woody stems remain for structural interest.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and moths due to its sweetly scented, nectar-rich flowers. Dense growth offers nesting cover for small birds and insects.
Garden Use:
Excellent choice for quickly covering fences, pergolas, arches, and unsightly structures. Ideal in wildlife or cottage gardens. Can also be allowed to sprawl as ground cover on banks or slopes. Best in spaces where vigorous growth can be controlled or directed.
