Growing Conditions
Light:
Requires full sun for optimal growth, fragrance, and flower production. Needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
Soil:
Prefers well-drained, light, sandy or loamy soils. Thrives in moderately fertile, alkaline to neutral soils. Avoid waterlogged, heavy clay soils.
Exposure:
Grows well in exposed or sheltered locations. Tolerant of wind and coastal conditions, though excessive humidity or dampness should be avoided.
Drought Tolerance:
High once established. Ideal for drought-tolerant gardens and Mediterranean-style plantings. It does well in dry, well-drained soils.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring (after the last frost) or early autumn for best results. This allows roots to establish before harsh winter or summer heat.
Spacing:
Space plants 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart, as 'Anouk' tends to grow compactly but still requires airflow between plants to prevent disease.
Watering:
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots. Once established, only water during prolonged dry spells. Ensure the soil is well-drained to avoid root rot.
Fertilization:
Lavender does not require regular fertilizing. Use a low-nitrogen fertilizer in early spring if your soil is poor. Avoid overfeeding, as too much fertilizer can lead to leggy growth and fewer blooms.
Mulching:
Use gravel or sand mulch to promote drainage and reflect sunlight onto the plant. Avoid organic mulches around the crown, as they retain moisture and can lead to crown rot.
Pruning:
Prune lightly after flowering to remove spent blooms and prevent leggy growth. In late summer or early autumn, prune back by about one-third to maintain a compact shape and encourage more blooms the following season.
Propagation:
Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings taken in late summer or softwood cuttings in early spring. Lavender can also be grown from seed, but cuttings are recommended to preserve the specific characteristics of the cultivar.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Silvery-green foliage emerges, and new growth begins. Lavender 'Anouk' starts forming a compact mound of aromatic leaves.
Summer:
Produces vibrant purple-blue flowers in dense spikes from June to August. The flowers are fragrant and highly attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Autumn:
Flowering may taper off, but the plant's foliage remains silver-green, adding texture and structure to the garden. Faded flower spikes can be cut back or left for winter interest.
Winter:
Evergreen in mild climates, but may become semi-evergreen in colder regions. Protect from wet winter conditions to prevent root rot, especially in colder or heavy soil areas.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
A magnet for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it an excellent choice for wildlife gardens and pollinator-friendly landscapes.
Garden Use:
Ideal for low hedges, herb gardens, rockeries, containers, and Mediterranean-style landscapes. Its compact growth habit makes it great for smaller spaces and borders. Also works well in cottage gardens and scented gardens.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other Mediterranean and drought-tolerant plants such as Salvia, Thyme, Santolina, Eryngium, Nepeta, Rosemary, and ornamental grasses. Looks great with roses, geraniums, or succulents in mixed beds and borders.
