Growing Conditions
Light:
Thrives in full sun. Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal flowering and compact growth.
Soil:
Prefers well-drained, slightly alkaline to neutral soil. Ideal for sandy, loamy, or gravelly soils. Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged conditions.
Exposure:
Grows well in both exposed and sheltered locations. Tolerant of coastal conditions and light winds.
Drought Tolerance:
High. Once established, it is extremely drought-tolerant, making it suitable for dry gardens and Mediterranean-style plantings.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Best planted in spring after the risk of frost has passed. In milder climates, early autumn planting is also suitable.
Spacing:
Allow 30–60 cm (1–2 feet) between plants to ensure good airflow and prevent fungal diseases.
Watering:
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, water only during prolonged dry spells. Avoid overwatering.
Fertilization:
No regular feeding needed. If soil is extremely poor, apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer in early spring. Overfeeding may reduce fragrance and flower production.
Mulching:
Use gravel or sand mulch to improve drainage and reflect light. Avoid organic mulches, which retain moisture around the crown.
Pruning:
Prune lightly after flowering, removing spent blooms and shaping the plant. Cut back by one-third in late summer to early autumn to maintain a compact shape. Avoid cutting into old, woody stems.
Propagation:
Easily propagated by semi-ripe cuttings in summer or softwood cuttings in spring. Can also be grown from seed, though slower to establish.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
New silvery-green foliage emerges. Plants begin to bulk up as weather warms.
Summer:
Produces fragrant, spike-like violet-blue flowers from June to August. Aromatic foliage and flowers are highly ornamental and useful.
Autumn:
Flowers fade. Foliage remains attractive and compact into autumn.
Winter:
Evergreen in mild climates. In colder regions, may become semi-evergreen or die back slightly. Pruned plants retain better structure over winter.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.
Garden Use:
Ideal for borders, cottage gardens, herb gardens, gravel gardens, and low hedging. Perfect for containers, dry banks, and coastal sites. The unusual flower colour offers striking contrast in mixed plantings.
Companion Plants:
Complements plants like Rosemary, Thyme, Salvia, Santolina, Nepeta, Eryngium, and ornamental grasses. Combines well with darker-hued roses for a dramatic effect.
