Growing Conditions

Light:
Performs best in partial shade to full shade. Can tolerate some gentle morning sun, which may enhance leaf colour, but avoid strong midday or afternoon sun as it can cause leaf scorch and reduce the blue tone.

Soil:
Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Thrives in slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Good moisture retention is important, but soil must drain well—avoid waterlogged or very dry soils.

Exposure:
Best in a sheltered position, protected from strong winds that can damage its large, textured leaves. Fully hardy across the UK and well-suited to woodland or shaded garden environments.

Drought Tolerance:
Moderate once established, though consistent moisture is important for optimal growth. Drought can cause leaves to lose their blue colouring and develop dry edges.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn. Spring planting allows strong establishment before active growth; autumn planting encourages root development ahead of winter dormancy.

Spacing:
Allow 90–120 cm (36–48 inches) between plants. Mature plants typically reach 60–75 cm (24–30 inches) tall and 90–120 cm (36–48 inches) wide, forming a broad, domed clump.

Watering & Fertilisation:
Water regularly, especially during dry spells, to keep soil consistently moist. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to support vigorous foliage. Avoid overhead watering to preserve the attractive leaf surface and reduce disease risk.

Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring with compost or well-rotted organic matter to retain moisture and suppress weeds—keep mulch away from the crown. Remove any damaged or tired leaves during the growing season. Cut back foliage after the first frost once it has died down.

Propagation:
Best propagated by division in spring or early autumn. Divide every 4–5 years to maintain plant health and vigour.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Large, heavily textured, heart-shaped leaves emerge with a powdery blue-grey coating. The thick, puckered foliage gives strong architectural presence early in the season.

Summer:
Foliage maintains its blue tone in good shade, though it may become more blue-green over time. In early to mid-summer, near-white to pale lavender flowers appear on sturdy stems above the foliage, adding height and interest.

Autumn:
Leaves gradually fade and lose their blue coating as temperatures drop. Foliage remains substantial before dying back.

Winter:
Deciduous. Dies back completely in winter. Remove spent foliage after frost to reduce the risk of pests and diseases.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Flowers attract bees and other pollinators. Thick leaves offer some resistance to slugs compared to thinner-leaved varieties, though protection may still be needed.

Garden Use:
Ideal as a bold focal point in shaded borders or woodland gardens. Its large, blue, textured foliage provides strong contrast with finer or brighter plants. Also suitable for planting near water features or in large containers.

Companion Plants:
Pairs well with:

  • Heuchera varieties (e.g. ‘Silver Scrolls’, ‘Plum Pudding’)
  • Ferns
  • Brunnera
  • Astilbe
  • Pulmonaria

Combines beautifully with silver, deep green, and purple foliage, and complements soft tones of white, lavender, and pale pink flowers.
