Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for best flowering. Tolerates partial shade well, especially in hot areas where some afternoon shade helps preserve flower colour.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Prefers loamy or sandy soils with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Avoid waterlogged or heavy clay soils, which can promote root rot.
Exposure:
Ideal for sunny, sheltered spots on fences, trellises, obelisks, or against walls. Ensure roots are kept cool and shaded — mulch the base or plant low-growing groundcovers around the root zone.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Needs regular watering during dry periods, especially in its first few seasons. Once established, tolerates brief droughts but flowers best with consistent moisture.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring after the last frost, or in early autumn to give roots time to establish before winter.
Spacing:
Allow 1–1.2 m (3–4 ft) between plants or other climbers. Reaches a height of 2–2.5 m (6–8 ft) with proper support.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during the growing season. Apply a balanced or high-potash fertilizer in early spring and again after the first flush of flowers to promote reblooming.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to conserve soil moisture and regulate temperature.
Pruning group 2:
-
Lightly prune in late winter or early spring (February–March), removing dead or weak stems.
-
After the first flowering (May–June), a light summer prune may encourage a second flush in late summer.
Propagation:
Propagate by softwood or semi-ripe cuttings in late spring to early summer. Layering is also effective. As a named cultivar, vegetative propagation is needed to maintain true characteristics.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
New foliage appears early. The first flush of large, elegant flowers appears in late spring (May–June).
Summer:
Often reblooms in late summer (August) if lightly pruned and properly fed. Flowers are creamy white with a slight green tint when young, maturing to pure white, accented by striking reddish-brown stamens. Each bloom is around 10–15 cm across.
Autumn:
Second flowering may extend into early autumn. Leaves may take on a soft golden hue before dropping.
Winter:
Deciduous. Plant remains dormant with bare stems until pruned in late winter or early spring.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies. May offer vertical shelter for insects during the growing season.
Garden Use:
A compact, elegant clematis perfect for smaller gardens, patio containers, obelisks, or trellises. Ideal for cottage gardens, formal borders, and shaded walls. Works well as a feature near entrances or in decorative pots with proper support.
Companion Plants:
Combines beautifully with darker-flowered clematis (e.g. Niobe, The President) or climbing roses. Pairs well with perennials like Lavender, Salvia, Geranium, and Campanula. The pure white blooms contrast elegantly with purple, blue, or silver-leaved plants.
