Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Performs best with at least 6 hours of sunlight daily. Tolerates partial shade well and is one of the few light-coloured clematis that still flowers well in shadier conditions.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Prefers loamy or sandy soil with neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Avoid heavy, wet, or compacted soils that may cause root problems.
Exposure:
Ideal for sunny or lightly shaded walls, fences, pergolas, or trellises. Likes its roots shaded and cool — mulch at the base or plant groundcovers around the root zone to protect from heat and sun.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Requires regular watering during dry periods, especially in the first year. Once established, tolerates occasional dry spells but benefits from consistent moisture during flowering.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in early spring or autumn when the soil is workable and not frozen. Autumn planting helps root establishment before winter.
Spacing:
Space 1.2–1.5 m (4–5 ft) apart from other large climbers. Grows 3–4.5 m (10–15 ft) tall when supported, making it ideal for covering vertical structures.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water well during dry spells. Feed with a high-potash fertilizer in early spring and again after the first flush of blooms to promote reblooming. Avoid nitrogen-rich feeds that produce more leaves than flowers.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
Pruning group 3:
-
Cut back all stems to 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) above ground level in late winter or early spring (February–March).
-
This encourages vigorous new growth that will carry that season’s flowers.
Propagation:
Propagate by layering or softwood/semi-ripe cuttings in spring or summer. Named cultivars should be propagated vegetatively to maintain true form and flower colour.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
New green foliage emerges in early spring. Vigorous shoot growth begins as temperatures rise.
Summer:
Masses of large (8–10 cm), pearly white flowers with a hint of lavender and delicate wavy edges bloom from mid to late summer (July–September). Slightly nodding flowers add graceful movement.
Autumn:
Flowering often continues into early autumn. Leaves may turn yellow before falling.
Winter:
Deciduous. Dies back completely; prune to ground level as part of Group 3 care.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Attracts bees and pollinators to the garden. Dense foliage during summer may provide seasonal cover for small wildlife and insects.
Garden Use:
Excellent for covering large vertical surfaces such as pergolas, arches, trellises, fences, and obelisks. A strong performer in cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, or for creating a romantic look on garden structures. Can also be grown through small trees or paired with climbing roses.
Companion Plants:
Combines beautifully with deep purple or pink clematis (e.g. Niobe, Ernest Markham) or climbing roses. Complements perennials such as Salvia, Echinacea, Campanula, Nepeta, and ornamental grasses. Pale blooms create striking contrast against dark foliage or bold-coloured flowers.
