Why Buy Me?

  • Flowers are attractive to wildlife
  • Masses of red flowers
  • sun or part shade

Growing Conditions

Light:
Full sun to light shade. Performs best in full sun, which encourages the most vibrant flowering and robust growth. At least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily is recommended for optimal flowering. In too much shade, flowering may be reduced, and the plant may become more leggy.

Soil:
Well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Prefers loamy or sandy soils but adapts well to clay soils as long as they drain properly. Tolerates slightly acidic to neutral pH, but it thrives in slightly acidic conditions.

Exposure:
Suitable for both sheltered and exposed locations. Hardy in USDA zones 4–8 (UK H5). Tolerates colder climates but may require some protection from strong winter winds, especially in the northernmost parts of its range.

Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant. However, regular watering during dry spells is beneficial, especially during the first few growing seasons to ensure strong growth and flowering.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Best planted in early spring or autumn when temperatures are mild. This allows the plant to establish its root system before the more extreme temperatures of summer or winter. Container-grown plants can be planted throughout the growing season as long as there is adequate moisture.

Spacing:
Space 90–120 cm (3–4 feet) apart to allow for its spreading, compact growth habit. Mature size is around 1.5–2 m (5–6 feet) tall and wide, creating a well-rounded shrub that provides full coverage.

Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. After establishment, water during dry spells to maintain healthy growth. Fertilize with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage optimal flowering and growth.

Mulching & Pruning:
Apply mulch annually in spring to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Prune immediately after flowering to remove spent blooms and promote new growth. Light pruning helps maintain a tidy shape. Avoid heavy pruning, which could reduce blooms the following year.

Propagation:
Propagate by softwood cuttings taken in late spring to early summer. Can also be propagated by layering or from seed, though cuttings are most commonly used.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Red Prince Weigela produces an abundance of trumpet-shaped, bright red flowers in late spring to early summer (May–June), which are highly attractive to hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. The vibrant blooms create a striking display.

Summer:
The plant continues to produce dark green foliage throughout summer, which contrasts beautifully with the bright red flowers. While flowering may slow, it can occasionally rebloom in mid to late summer, especially if the plant is deadheaded after the first flush.

Autumn:
The foliage may turn yellow or bronze in autumn, offering additional seasonal interest. The plant's compact size and structure provide a neat look even as the flowers fade.

Winter:
Deciduous. Loses its leaves in winter but retains a neat, rounded shape. Pruning during dormancy can help maintain shape or reduce the size of the shrub if needed.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Attracts hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies due to its bright, nectar-rich flowers. The dense foliage provides shelter for small birds and insects. Generally not a significant food source for mammals, but it is an excellent choice for supporting pollinators in the garden.

Garden Use:
Ideal for mixed borders, foundation plantings, or as a specimen shrub. Its compact, rounded form makes it a great choice for smaller gardens or even as a colourful hedge. Also works well in cottage gardens or wildlife-friendly landscapes.

Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other sun-loving shrubs such as Spiraea, Abelia, and Potentilla, as well as perennials like Salvia, Geranium, Daylilies, and Lavender. Its vibrant red flowers provide a bold contrast with green or purple-leaved plants, making it an excellent focal point in a garden.
