Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Performs best in full sun, which promotes the most abundant flowering and vibrant foliage. Can tolerate light shade, but flowering may be less prolific.
Soil:
Well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH but adapts well to various soil types, including sandy, loamy, or clay soils. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
Exposure:
Tolerates both sheltered and exposed positions. This plant is hardy and can withstand colder climates, but it should be protected from strong, cold winds to prevent damage to flowers.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Tolerates short periods of drought once established but benefits from consistent moisture. Ensure the soil does not dry out completely during dry spells, especially in the first few years.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in early spring or early autumn, when temperatures are mild and the soil is moist. Avoid planting during very hot or dry periods.
Spacing:
Space 90–120 cm (3–4 feet) apart to allow for the natural spreading habit and to promote good air circulation.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly, especially during dry spells. After planting, keep the soil moist but not soggy. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to promote healthy growth and blooming.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch annually with organic material such as bark or compost to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune immediately after flowering, cutting back spent flower heads to shape the plant. You can also lightly prune to maintain size and remove any dead or damaged wood.
Propagation:
Propagate by softwood cuttings in late spring or early summer. You can also propagate by semi-ripe cuttings or by dividing established plants in early spring.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Fresh green foliage appears early in the season, and abundant white flowers begin to bloom in late spring. The flowers form dense, rounded clusters, covering the plant in a "snowy" effect, hence the name Snowmound.
Summer:
The white flowers continue into early summer, creating a profuse and long-lasting floral display. The foliage remains fresh and vibrant.
Autumn:
Foliage may shift to shades of yellow or bronze in the fall, adding seasonal interest before it falls off in winter.
Winter:
Deciduous. The plant loses its leaves in winter, but the mounding structure provides light winter interest and can be cut back in late winter to encourage fresh spring growth.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
The small, white flowers attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. Although not a primary food source, the dense, rounded habit offers shelter for small birds in the garden.
Garden Use:
Ideal for shrub borders, hedges, and foundation plantings. Snowmound works well in mixed borders, cottage gardens, and as a specimen plant. Its compact size and easy-care nature make it a great choice for low-maintenance gardens.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other flowering shrubs such as Roses, Spiraea japonica, Hydrangeas, and Weigela. It can also complement perennials like Coreopsis, Echinacea, Astilbe, and Geranium, adding texture and colour to the garden.
