Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Best foliage colour (especially pink spring growth) occurs in full sun. Can tolerate some shade but may become leggier and less vibrant in colour.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained soil. Tolerates a wide range of soil types including clay, loam, and sandy soils. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH. Avoid very dry or poorly drained sites.
Exposure:
Hardy and wind-tolerant. Suitable for exposed or sheltered locations. Tolerates cold climates well.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Tolerates short dry spells once established but prefers consistent moisture for lush growth. Avoid prolonged drought.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn when soil is moist and temperatures are cool.
Spacing:
Space 90–120 cm (3–4 feet) apart, allowing room for suckering habit and natural spread.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during the first year. Mature plants require less frequent watering but benefit from moisture during hot, dry periods. Fertilize in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch annually with compost or bark to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring—cut back stems to near ground level to rejuvenate and maintain a compact shape.
Propagation:
Propagate by division in early spring or autumn, or by root cuttings. Will spread by suckers, which can be dug up and replanted.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
New foliage emerges with striking shades of pink, bronze, and chartreuse. Colourful young leaves are a key ornamental feature.
Summer:
Mature leaves are bright green and fern-like. In mid to late summer, fluffy, creamy-white flower plumes appear, resembling Astilbe.
Autumn:
Foliage may take on yellow to copper tones before dropping. Suckering growth habit continues to fill in space.
Winter:
Deciduous. Bare stems remain upright, providing light structure. Can be cut back in late winter to encourage fresh spring growth.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Flowers attract pollinators including bees and butterflies. Dense foliage and suckering growth may offer cover for small wildlife.
Garden Use:
Excellent for informal borders, naturalistic plantings, or as a colorful foliage shrub in mixed beds. Also suitable for erosion control on slopes due to its spreading roots. Works well in cottage gardens or low-maintenance landscapes.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with shade- or moisture-tolerant plants such as Astilbe, Hosta, Ferns, Rodgersia, Persicaria, and Hakonechloa. Its colorful foliage complements darker-leaved or finer-textured companions
