    Why Buy Me?

    • Clusters of tiny red flower buds
    • White scented flowers in Spring
    • Evergreen
    • Hardy and compact

    Growing Conditions

    Light:
Partial to full shade. Thrives in dappled shade and sheltered spots. Can tolerate full shade but avoid strong, direct afternoon sun, which may bleach the foliage.

    Soil:
Moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Dislikes chalky or alkaline soils. Enrich with organic matter or ericaceous compost to maintain optimal conditions.

    Exposure:
Prefers a sheltered position, out of cold, drying winds and protected from late frosts, which can damage flower buds.

    Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Once established, it can tolerate short dry periods, but performs best with consistently moist soil. Avoid waterlogged or very dry conditions.

    Cultivation & Care

    Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn, when soil is moist and temperatures are cool.

    Spacing:
Space 75–100 cm (2.5–3.5 feet) apart. Forms a naturally compact, rounded mound over time.

    Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during dry spells, especially in the first year. Feed in spring with a slow-release, ericaceous fertilizer to encourage healthy growth and berry production.

    Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch annually with leaf mould, compost, or bark to conserve moisture and enrich soil. Minimal pruning required—trim lightly after flowering to shape if needed.

    Propagation:
Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings in late summer. Can also be grown from seed, though slow to mature.

    Seasonal Interest

    Spring:
Fragrant, creamy-white flowers bloom in clusters, attracting early pollinators. Glossy evergreen foliage forms a neat, dense shape.

    Summer:
Foliage remains lush and attractive. Flowers give way to developing red berries.

    Autumn:
Bright, glossy red berries ripen and contrast beautifully with the dark green leaves.

    Winter:
Evergreen foliage and persistent red berries provide striking winter interest and colour.

    Wildlife & Garden Use

    Wildlife:
Flowers are highly attractive to bees and other early-season pollinators. Berries are a winter food source for birds.

    Garden Use:
Excellent choice for shade borders, woodland gardens, foundation plantings, and containers (in ericaceous compost). Its compact, self-fertile nature makes it ideal for small gardens or courtyards.

    Companion Plants:
Pairs beautifully with shade-loving plants such as Sarcococca, Helleborus, Ferns, Heuchera, Hosta, and Pulmonaria. Complements spring-flowering bulbs like Galanthus and Narcissus.
