Skimmia japonica Foremanii
Growing Conditions
Light:
Partial to full shade. Prefers dappled or light shade. Tolerates full shade but may produce fewer flowers. Avoid hot afternoon sun, which can bleach or scorch foliage.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Avoid chalky or alkaline soils, which can cause yellowing (chlorosis). Enrich with organic matter for best results.
Exposure:
Best in a sheltered spot, protected from cold, drying winds and late spring frosts that can damage buds.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Reasonably drought-tolerant once established but performs best with consistent moisture—avoid prolonged dry spells.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in early spring or autumn when the soil is moist and workable.
Spacing:
Space 75–100 cm (2.5–3.5 feet) apart to allow for natural mounding shape and mature spread.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly in dry weather, especially during the first growing season. Feed in spring with an ericaceous or balanced slow-release fertilizer to support healthy foliage and flowering.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch annually in spring with leaf mould or composted bark to retain soil moisture and enrich the soil. Minimal pruning needed—lightly trim after flowering to maintain shape or remove damaged shoots.
Propagation:
Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings in summer. Can also be propagated from seed, but may take several years to flower.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Bright red flower buds formed in autumn open to fragrant, creamy-white flowers in dense clusters. A standout early bloomer in shady borders.
Summer:
Glossy, evergreen foliage remains attractive. Male plant, so it does not bear fruit, but contributes pollen if female skimmia are nearby.
Autumn:
Develops vibrant red flower buds for the following spring, offering visual interest through fall and winter.
Winter:
Retains flower buds and rich evergreen foliage, providing strong winter structure and colour.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Flowers attract early bees and pollinators. Though this cultivar is male and does not bear berries, it supports female varieties by providing pollen for berry production.
Garden Use:
Ideal for shaded borders, foundation plantings, woodland gardens, and containers (use ericaceous compost). Excellent near entrances or paths for winter and early spring fragrance.
Companion Plants:
Combines beautifully with other shade-lovers like Sarcococca, Camellia, Helleborus, Heuchera, Ferns, and spring bulbs like Narcissus and Galanthus. Pairs especially well with female Skimmia japonica cultivars for ornamental berry displays.
