Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Prefers full sun for best flowering and fruiting. Tolerates some shade but may produce fewer blooms in low-light conditions.
Soil:
Well-drained soil; tolerates a wide range of soil types including clay, loam, and sandy soils. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH but is adaptable.
Exposure:
Best grown in an open, sunny location with good air circulation. Can tolerate wind but benefits from shelter in colder regions to protect early blooms from late frosts.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Fairly drought-tolerant once established, but performs best with occasional deep watering during dry spells.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Early spring or autumn, when soil is workable and temperatures are cool.
Spacing:
Space 120–180 cm (4–6 feet) apart to allow good air flow and accommodate mature spread.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Mature plants need less frequent watering. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch annually with compost or bark to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune immediately after flowering to shape, remove dead wood, and encourage new growth.
Propagation:
Propagate by hardwood cuttings in winter or semi-ripe cuttings in late summer. Can also be propagated from seed, though germination may be slow.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Highly fragrant yellow flowers bloom in clusters, emitting a spicy clove-like scent. A favourite among early-season flowering shrubs.
Summer:
Attractive green foliage; small black berries may develop, edible and used in jams or preserves.
Autumn:
Foliage turns shades of red and orange, offering good fall colour.
Winter:
Deciduous. Bare stems may provide winter structure and contrast in the garden.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other early pollinators. Berries are eaten by birds and small mammals.
Garden Use:
Excellent for hedges, mixed shrub borders, naturalized plantings, or wildlife gardens. Suitable for low-maintenance or xeriscape designs.
Companion Plants:
Combines well with native prairie plants, flowering shrubs like Spiraea or Viburnum, and perennials such as Echinacea, Rudbeckia, and Solidago.
