    Why Buy Me?

    • Provide berries to the local birds
    • Colour all winter
    • Masses of white flowers in Spring

    Growing Conditions

    • Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Best flowering and fruiting occur in full sun.

    • Soil:
Well-drained soil. Tolerates a wide range of soil types, including clay, loam, chalk, and sandy soils. Performs well in slightly acidic to neutral pH.

    • Exposure:
Tolerates both sheltered and exposed sites. Very hardy and wind-resistant — suitable for urban and coastal locations.

    • Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Once established, tolerates occasional dry periods.

    Cultivation & Care

    • Planting Time:
Plant in spring or autumn when soil is moist and temperatures are moderate.

    • Spacing:
Space 1–1.5 metres (3–5 feet) apart for hedging or wall-training. Grows up to 2–3 metres in height and spread.

    • Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during the first growing season. Thereafter, water during long dry spells. Feed in early spring with a general-purpose fertilizer to promote strong growth and berry production.

    • Mulching & Pruning:
Apply mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring to shape, maintain size, and remove dead or congested growth. Wear gloves — the plant has sharp thorns.

    • Propagation:
Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings in late summer or by seed (after berry stratification).

    Seasonal Interest

    • Spring:
Masses of small, creamy-white flowers bloom in clusters, attracting pollinators.

    • Summer:
Evergreen foliage remains glossy green; berries begin to form after flowering.

    • Autumn:
Clusters of bright yellow berries ripen, offering striking colour against green leaves.

    • Winter:
Evergreen. Berries persist into winter, adding seasonal interest and providing bird food.

    Wildlife & Garden Use

    • Wildlife:
Flowers attract bees and other pollinators. Berries are a valuable food source for birds. Dense, thorny branches offer shelter and nesting habitat.

    • Garden Use:
Excellent for defensive or security hedging, wildlife gardens, wall training, or as a barrier plant. Works well in low-maintenance and year-round interest planting schemes.

    • Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other berry-producing or evergreen shrubs such as Cotoneaster, Mahonia, and Viburnum. Also effective with spring bulbs and groundcovers like Vinca or Geranium macrorrhizum.
