- Provide berries to the local birds

Growing Conditions
-
Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Produces the most flowers and berries in full sun. -
Soil:
Well-drained soil. Grows well in a range of soil types including clay, loam, chalk, and sandy soils. Tolerates acidic to slightly alkaline conditions. -
Exposure:
Sheltered or exposed positions. Hardy and resilient — tolerates urban pollution and coastal winds. -
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate once established. Benefits from watering in prolonged dry periods, especially when young.
Cultivation & Care
-
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or autumn when soil conditions are moist and temperatures are mild. -
Spacing:
Space 1–1.5 metres (3–5 feet) apart for hedging or wall-training. Grows upright to 2–3 metres tall. -
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, only occasional watering is needed. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and fruiting. -
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch annually in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring to shape and control size. Can be wall-trained or used as a free-standing hedge. Wear gloves when pruning — the plant is thorny. -
Propagation:
Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings in late summer or by seed (berries must be stratified before sowing).
Seasonal Interest
-
Spring:
Clusters of small creamy-white flowers bloom, attracting pollinators. -
Summer:
Glossy green, evergreen foliage maintains a neat, spiny structure. Berries begin forming. -
Autumn:
Clusters of bright red berries ripen, creating a bold seasonal display. -
Winter:
Evergreen. Berries persist through winter, providing colour and bird food. Thorny stems provide excellent shelter.
Wildlife & Garden Use
-
Wildlife:
Flowers attract bees and other pollinators. Berries provide a valuable winter food source for birds. Dense, thorny branches offer nesting and protection for birds and small animals. -
Garden Use:
Excellent for security hedging, wildlife gardens, wall training, or barrier planting. Ideal for year-round interest and low-maintenance screening. -
Companion Plants:
Combines well with other bird-friendly shrubs such as Cotoneaster, Viburnum, and Berberis. Also pairs nicely with spring bulbs and evergreen groundcovers.
