  • Clusters of tiny flowers
  • Evergreen

Growing Conditions

  • Light: Full sun to partial shade. Best foliage colour develops in full sun, though it tolerates light shade.

  • Soil: Well-drained soil; tolerates a variety of soil types including acidic, neutral, and alkaline. Prefers humus-rich, moderately fertile soil.

  • Exposure: Sheltered position recommended. Protect from cold, drying winds which can scorch young foliage.

  • Drought Tolerance: Once established, drought-tolerant. Benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells.

Cultivation & Care

  • Planting Time: Spring or early autumn when soil is workable and conditions are mild.

  • Spacing: Space plants approximately 0.5–1 metre (1.5–3 feet) apart depending on intended use (hedge vs. specimen).

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to encourage strong root development. Reduce frequency once established.

  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy foliage and growth.

  • Mulching: Apply a 5–7 cm (2–3 inch) layer of mulch around the base in spring to retain soil moisture and suppress weed growth. Avoid contact with the main stem.

  • Pruning: Minimal pruning needed. Remove frost-damaged or dead shoots in spring. Light trimming after flowering helps maintain shape and density.

  • Propagation: Propagate from semi-ripe cuttings taken in late spring to early summer. Rooting hormone may improve success rate.

Seasonal Interest

  • Spring: New growth appears in shades of creamy white, pink, and light green, gradually maturing to gold and green variegation.

  • Summer: Evergreen variegated foliage remains vibrant; occasional small, fragrant white flowers may appear in late summer.

  • Autumn: Foliage colour deepens; plant continues to provide structure and interest in borders and mixed plantings.

  • Winter: Evergreen; provides consistent colour and architectural form throughout the cold season.

Wildlife & Garden Use

  • Wildlife: Flowers attract bees and other pollinators. Dense foliage offers shelter for small garden wildlife.

  • Garden Use: Excellent for borders, foundation plantings, hedges, and specimen use. Well-suited to cottage gardens, low-maintenance landscapes, and container planting.

  • Companion Plants: Pairs beautifully with Mediterranean and drought-tolerant plants like rosemary, lavender, Santolina, and dwarf conifers. Also complements shade-tolerant evergreens like Skimmia and Sarcococca in mixed plantings.
