Growing Conditions

Light:
Requires full sun for best flowering and growth. Prefers a warm, sunny position sheltered from cold winds.

Soil:
Grows best in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Tolerates poor, sandy, or chalky soils, but does not thrive in heavy or waterlogged ground.

Exposure:
Performs well in sheltered or moderately exposed positions. Protect from harsh winter winds and frost pockets, especially in colder climates.

Drought Tolerance:
High once established. Ideal for dry gardens, coastal areas, and low-maintenance borders.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn, when soil is warm and moist.

Spacing:
Allow 1.2–1.5 metres (4–5 feet) between plants. Reaches around 2 metres (6.5 feet) tall and wide at maturity.

Watering:
Water regularly during the first season. Once established, water only during prolonged dry spells.

Fertilization:
Minimal feeding needed. Apply a general-purpose fertilizer in spring if soil is very poor, but avoid overfeeding which may lead to weak growth.

Mulching:
Apply mulch in spring to retain moisture and reduce weed growth, especially in the first year.

Pruning:
Prune hard in early spring (late March–early April) to 15–30 cm (6–12 inches) above ground. Encourages bushy, vigorous new growth and abundant flowering.

Propagation:
Propagate by softwood cuttings in spring or semi-ripe cuttings in summer. Can also be grown from seed, though cultivars may not come true.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Fresh, lobed foliage emerges. Fast-growing stems develop quickly.

Summer:
Abundant, pale pink flowers with dark pink centres bloom from June to September. Flowers resemble hibiscus and attract pollinators.

Autumn:
Flowering may continue into early autumn. Foliage remains until frost. Cut back after final bloom.

Winter:
Deciduous. Stems may die back in harsh winters. In colder regions, provide a mulch layer or shelter for root protection.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. A good choice for supporting garden biodiversity.

Garden Use:
Excellent for mixed borders, cottage gardens, sunny coastal gardens, and wildlife-friendly spaces. Makes a bold impact in summer with its prolific blooms and upright form.

Companion Plants:
Pairs well with Lavandula, Nepeta, Salvia, Achillea, Gaura, and ornamental grasses. Works beautifully with other sun-loving perennials in Mediterranean or naturalistic plantings.
