Growing Conditions

Light:
Requires full sun for best flowering and growth. Performs poorly in shade. Needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Soil:
Prefers well-drained soil and tolerates a range of soil types from sandy to loamy. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0–7.0). Avoid waterlogged or heavy clay soils to prevent root rot.

Exposure:
Best planted in a sheltered spot away from strong winds that can damage tall flower spikes. Hardy in most of the UK, but may benefit from winter protection in colder areas.

Drought Tolerance:
Moderately drought-tolerant once established. Regular watering helps during dry spells, especially when flowering.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Plant in spring after the risk of frost has passed or in early autumn to allow root establishment.

Spacing:
Space plants 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart. Mature height is typically 60–90 cm (24–36 inches) tall with a spread of about 45 cm (18 inches).

Watering & Fertilisation:
Water regularly during dry spells, especially in the growing and flowering season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Avoid overwatering, especially in winter.

Mulching & Pruning:
Apply mulch in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the crown. Cut back old flower spikes after blooming to encourage fresh growth.

Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring or early autumn. Dividing every 3–4 years helps rejuvenate the clump and maintain flowering vigour.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
New shoots emerge from the crown, with fresh foliage developing in attractive grassy clumps.

Summer:
Striking flower spikes appear from early to mid-summer, showcasing dense, upright clusters of lemon-yellow to creamy-white tubular flowers that gradually age to soft orange. The flowers attract hummingbirds and pollinators.

Autumn:
Foliage remains attractive through early autumn but dies back after the first frost.

Winter:
Leaves die back to the ground in winter. In colder areas, protect the crown with mulch to prevent frost damage.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds (where present), making it valuable for pollinator-friendly gardens.

Garden Use:
Ideal for sunny borders, rock gardens, wildlife gardens, and cut flower beds. Adds vertical interest and bright, long-lasting colour during summer months.

Companion Plants:
Pairs well with:

  • Lavender

  • Salvia

  • Echinacea

  • Grasses such as Miscanthus or Pennisetum

  • Sedum

Works well alongside plants with contrasting foliage textures and complementary summer flowering.
