Growing Conditions
Light:
Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Best flowering occurs in full sun, but it tolerates light shade well.
Soil:
Prefers moist, well-drained soil. Adapts to a variety of soil types, including loamy, sandy, or clay. Tolerates poor soil as long as it’s not waterlogged.
Exposure:
Grows well in sheltered or moderately exposed locations. Hardy and wind-tolerant once established.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Requires regular watering while establishing, but is fairly drought-tolerant once mature.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring or autumn when the soil is workable and conditions are mild.
Spacing:
Space 1–1.2 metres (3–4 feet) apart for mass planting or informal hedging. Compact form makes it suitable for smaller gaps in borders.
Watering:
Water regularly during the first year. Once established, it only needs watering in prolonged dry periods.
Fertilization:
Minimal feeding needed. Apply a general-purpose fertilizer in spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering if the soil is poor.
Mulching:
Mulch annually in spring with compost or well-rotted organic matter to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pruning:
Prune hard in early spring (late March to early April) to about 15–30 cm (6–12 inches) from the ground to rejuvenate growth and encourage prolific flowering.
Propagation:
Propagate by softwood or semi-ripe cuttings in summer, or by division of mature plants in early spring or autumn.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
New foliage emerges; plant begins to fill out with dense, leafy growth.
Summer:
Produces bright golden-yellow flowers with prominent stamens from June to September. Flowers are large (up to 5 cm across) and highly ornamental.
Autumn:
Continues flowering into early autumn. Some cultivars develop red-tinged berries. Foliage may take on bronzed tones before leaf fall.
Winter:
Semi-evergreen in mild winters; otherwise deciduous. Can provide some structure if stems are left unpruned until spring.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Flowers are rich in pollen and attract bees, hoverflies, and other beneficial pollinators.
Garden Use:
Excellent for low hedging, ground cover, shrub borders, or informal screens. Works well on banks, slopes, or in urban and coastal gardens due to its resilience and low maintenance needs.
Companion Plants:
Combines well with Lavandula, Nepeta, Spiraea, Perovskia, Cistus, and ornamental grasses. Adds vibrant colour to mixed borders and wildlife-friendly gardens.
