Growing Conditions

Light:
Best in partial shade to full shade. Tolerates some morning sun, which can enhance leaf colour, but avoid strong afternoon sun as it may scorch the margins and cause fading.

Soil:
Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Performs best in slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Avoid dry, sandy, or poorly drained soils, which can stress the plant and reduce leaf quality.

Exposure:
Thrives in a sheltered position, protected from strong winds that can damage its large leaves. Fully hardy throughout the UK and ideal for shaded or woodland settings.

Drought Tolerance:
Low to moderate. Requires consistent moisture for best growth. Extended dry periods may lead to wilting, browning edges, or reduced vigour.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn. Spring planting supports establishment before active growth, while autumn planting allows root systems to develop before dormancy.

Spacing:
Allow 90–120 cm (36–48 inches) between plants. Mature specimens can reach 60–75 cm (24–30 inches) tall and 120–150 cm (48–60 inches) wide, forming a large, spreading clump.

Watering & Fertilisation:
Water regularly to maintain evenly moist soil, especially during dry spells. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote strong foliage. Avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of leaf damage and disease.

Mulching & Pruning:
Apply a mulch of compost or well-rotted organic matter in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds—keep clear of the crown. Remove damaged or yellowing leaves as needed. Cut back foliage after the first frost when it dies down naturally.

Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring or early autumn. Divide every 4–5 years to maintain vigour and manage size.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Large, heart-shaped leaves emerge blue-green with broad yellow margins. Early growth is bold and architectural, making an immediate statement in shaded areas.

Summer:
Margins gradually soften to a pale yellow or creamy tone. The foliage remains strikingly textured and prominent. In mid to late summer, near-white to pale lavender flowers appear on tall stems above the foliage.

Autumn:
Leaves gradually fade and decline with cooler temperatures. Foliage may remain attractive into early autumn before dying back.

Winter:
Deciduous. Dies back completely. Remove dead foliage after frost to help prevent pests and diseases.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Flowers attract bees and other pollinators. The large leaves can provide shelter for insects, though they may also be prone to slug and snail damage.

Garden Use:
Excellent as a specimen plant in shaded borders or woodland gardens. Its large, bold foliage makes it ideal for creating structure and contrast. Works well under trees or alongside water features, and can be grown in large containers.
