Growing Conditions

Light:
Performs best in partial shade to full shade, though it tolerates some morning sun. In cooler areas, it can take more sun, but in hotter or exposed spots, provide afternoon shade to prevent leaf scorch and maintain strong variegation.

Soil:
Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Adapts to a range of soil types if drainage is good, including slightly acidic to neutral pH. Avoid very dry, sandy, or compacted soils, which can reduce vigour.

Exposure:
Thrives in a sheltered position, protected from strong winds and intense midday sun. Fully hardy throughout the UK and well-suited to shaded garden settings.

Drought Tolerance:
Low to moderate drought tolerance. Performs best with consistent moisture. Prolonged dry conditions can lead to wilting, browning leaf edges, and reduced growth.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn. Spring planting allows establishment before the growing season, while autumn planting encourages root development before winter dormancy.

Spacing:
Allow 60–75 cm (24–30 inches) between plants. Mature plants typically reach 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) tall and 75–90 cm (30–36 inches) wide, forming a broad, arching clump.

Watering & Fertilisation:
Water regularly, particularly during dry periods. Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote lush foliage. Avoid overhead watering where possible to minimise leaf damage and disease.

Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring with compost or well-rotted organic matter to conserve moisture and suppress weeds—keep mulch clear of the crown. Remove yellowing or damaged leaves during the growing season. Cut back foliage after the first frost once it has died down naturally.

Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring or early autumn. Divide every 3–5 years to maintain plant health, vigour, and size control.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Foliage emerges fresh and vibrant, with mid-green centres and broad golden-yellow margins. Leaves are slightly glossy and create an immediate visual impact in shaded borders.

Summer:
Margins soften to a creamy yellow or pale ivory, contrasting attractively with the green centres. In mid to late summer, pale lavender flowers rise above the foliage on upright stems, attracting pollinators.

Autumn:
Foliage remains presentable into early autumn, gradually fading as temperatures drop. Leaves may take on a softer tone before dying back.

Winter:
Deciduous. Dies back completely in winter. Remove spent foliage after frost to reduce overwintering pests and maintain garden hygiene.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects. Dense foliage can provide shelter for small invertebrates, though leaves may be susceptible to slug and snail damage.

Garden Use:
Excellent for shady borders, woodland gardens, and underplanting trees and shrubs. Works well in containers and adds bold texture and contrast with its broad, variegated leaves. Ideal for brightening darker corners of the garden.

Companion Plants:
Pairs well with:

  • Heuchera varieties (e.g. ‘Marmalade’, ‘Obsidian’, ‘Forever Purple’)
  • Ferns
  • Brunnera
  • Astilbe
  • Pulmonaria

Combines beautifully with silver, deep burgundy, and lime-green foliage, and complements soft tones of purple, pink, and white flowers.
