Growing Conditions
Light:
Requires full sun to thrive. Needs direct sunlight for most of the day to ensure compact growth and prolific flowering.
Soil:
Prefers well-drained, light, sandy or gritty soils. Performs best in poor to moderately fertile soils. Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged conditions, which can cause root rot.
Exposure:
Tolerates both sheltered and moderately exposed sites. Excellent for coastal gardens due to salt and wind tolerance. Hardy in mild climates but may need protection in colder zones.
Drought Tolerance:
High. Once established, it is extremely drought-tolerant and ideal for xeriscaping or dry, Mediterranean-style gardens.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn to allow root systems to establish before summer heat or winter cold.
Spacing:
Space 60–90 cm (2–3 feet) apart to allow for natural spreading and airflow. This encourages bushy growth and prevents fungal issues.
Watering:
Water regularly during the first year. Once established, it requires minimal watering. Overwatering should be avoided.
Fertilization:
Generally does not require feeding. Thrives in nutrient-poor soils. Fertilizing can lead to excessive leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
Mulching:
Not essential, but a light gravel mulch can help suppress weeds and retain some moisture. Avoid organic mulches that retain moisture near the base.
Pruning:
Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new shoots. Avoid hard pruning into old wood, which may not regenerate.
Propagation:
Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings in late summer. Can also be grown from seed, though germination may be variable.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Masses of bright yellow, rockrose-like flowers with a maroon blotch at the base of each petal appear in late spring to early summer (May–June). A spectacular flowering display.
Summer:
Flowering continues into early summer. After blooming, the plant maintains neat grey-green foliage that contrasts well with other plants.
Autumn:
Foliage remains tidy, forming a low, mounded shrub. No significant autumn coluor change.
Winter:
Evergreen in mild climates, retaining its neat, silvery-green foliage and form. May suffer in severe frost but typically recovers in spring.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Flowers attract pollinators such as bees during peak blooming. Offers nectar and pollen at a time when early summer activity is high.
Garden Use:
Perfect for gravel gardens, coastal gardens, Mediterranean-themed landscapes, rockeries, and sunny slopes. A low-maintenance choice for dry, poor soils where other plants may struggle.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with drought-tolerant Mediterranean plants such as Cistus, Lavandula, Santolina, Thymus, and Helianthemum. Also combines beautifully with ornamental grasses or silver-foliaged plants for contrast.
