Why Buy Me?

  • Good drought tolerance
  • Interesting foliage colours
  • Compact habit

Growing Conditions

Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Performs best in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily, which enhances its red-tinged foliage and compact growth. In light shade, flowering may be reduced, but foliage remains attractive.

Soil:
Well-drained soil is essential. Prefers moderately fertile, sandy or loamy soils. Avoid heavy, poorly drained, or waterlogged conditions—root rot is a risk in wet soils. Tolerates poor and rocky soils and slightly acidic to alkaline pH.

Exposure:
Thrives in open, sunny spots and tolerates wind and heat well. Ideal for exposed or dry sites. Hardy in most temperate climates but may need winter protection in colder zones.

Drought Tolerance:
High. Extremely drought-tolerant once established. Ideal for xeriscaping and low-maintenance gardens. Avoid overwatering, especially in heavier soils.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn when soil is warm and workable. Early planting allows roots to establish before extreme heat or frost.

Spacing:
Space plants 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart. Grows to approximately 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) in height and spread, forming a compact, rounded mound.

Watering & Fertilization:
Water lightly and infrequently after establishment. Overwatering leads to leggy growth or rot. Fertilization is rarely necessary—if desired, apply a light dressing of balanced fertilizer in early spring.

Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch lightly in spring to suppress weeds and maintain moisture. Cut back flowering stems to the base after bloom to maintain form and encourage new growth. Handle with gloves—sap is a skin irritant. Remove any frost-damaged stems in early spring.

Propagation:
Propagate by softwood cuttings in late spring or early summer. Use gloves when handling, as all parts exude a milky sap that can irritate skin and eyes. Not typically grown from seed, as cultivars may not come true.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Bright green foliage emerges with red tips. Bracts begin to form in mid to late spring, developing into colourful red-tinged floral displays by late spring.

Summer:
Showy, long-lasting red-pink bracts surround small yellow-green true flowers. Foliage remains vibrant. The plant maintains a neat, bushy habit through the hottest months.

Autumn:
Bracts fade, but foliage may take on red or burgundy tones in cooler weather, adding continued interest. Growth slows as temperatures drop.

Winter:
Herbaceous in colder climates—dies back to the ground. In milder zones, may remain evergreen or semi-evergreen. Provide a mulch layer in autumn to protect roots from frost.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Generally unbothered by deer and rabbits due to toxic sap. Flowers attract pollinators like hoverflies and bees. Not invasive.

Garden Use:
Excellent for drought-tolerant borders, gravel or Mediterranean gardens, rockeries, and containers. Adds bold colour contrast and a tidy form. Great for modern, low-maintenance, or dry-style planting schemes.

Companion Plants:
Pairs well with Sedum, Agapanthus, Lavender, Festuca, Stachys, Erigeron, and ornamental grasses. Its red-tinged bracts contrast beautifully with silver, blue, or green foliage.
