Euonymus jap Aureo Marginatus

Why Buy Me?

  • Compact, low growing hedge
  • Interesting foliage
  • Good for ground cover

Growing Conditions

Light:
Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Foliage colour (green with golden-yellow margins) is brightest in full sun; tolerates some shade but too much reduces variegation intensity.

Soil:
Prefers well-drained soils but is tolerant of a wide range including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. Adapts to both slightly acidic and alkaline pH levels.

Exposure:
Performs well in sheltered or exposed positions. Wind-tolerant and suitable for coastal and urban environments. Protect from cold, drying winter winds in colder zones.

Drought Tolerance:
Moderate drought tolerance once well-established. Requires consistent watering in its first growing season and during prolonged dry periods.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn when soil is warm and moisture is more reliable for root development.

Spacing:
Allow 60–90 cm (2–3 feet) between plants for hedging or mass planting. Can be spaced more closely for a dense screen or clipped hedge.

Watering:
Water regularly during the first year. After establishment, it can tolerate some dryness but performs best with occasional deep watering during dry spells.

Fertilization:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring to encourage growth and maintain vibrant foliage. Avoid excessive fertilization, which can lead to weak, leggy growth.

Mulching:
Apply mulch around the base to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the root zone—especially beneficial in colder climates.

Pruning:
Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and size. Responds well to shearing and can be trained into formal hedges or topiary forms.

Propagation:
Easily propagated by semi-hardwood cuttings in late summer. Can also be propagated via hardwood cuttings in late autumn or early winter.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Fresh golden-margined foliage emerges, creating a cheerful, eye-catching effect. Strong upright growth begins.

Summer:
Bright, dense evergreen foliage remains vibrant; provides structure and colour contrast in borders and containers.

Autumn:
Foliage remains consistent in colour; may deepen slightly in tone but does not offer significant fall colour change.

Winter:
Evergreen with persistent variegated leaves that maintain interest and brightness through the winter months. Great for structural planting.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Provides year-round cover and shelter for birds and insects. Not a significant nectar or pollen source.

Garden Use:
Excellent for low to medium hedges, screens, foundation plantings, or as a striking container specimen. Useful in formal gardens, urban landscapes, coastal settings, and mixed shrub borders. Deer and rabbit resistant.

Companion Plants:
Combines well with boxwood, lavender, nandina, salvia, heuchera, and dwarf conifers. Ideal for pairing with purple or silver foliage plants for strong contrast.
