Why Buy Me?

  • Low growing hedge
  • Excellent foliage
  • Evergreen

Growing Conditions

Light:
Performs best in full sun to partial shade. Brightest foliage coloration develops in full sun, but it tolerates some shade. In deep shade, variegation may fade.

Soil:
Adaptable to a wide range of soil types—loam, clay, or sandy—provided the soil is well-drained. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH but tolerates slightly alkaline soils.

Exposure:
Thrives in both sheltered and exposed positions. Wind-tolerant and suitable for urban or coastal gardens. Hardy and resilient once established.

Drought Tolerance:
Moderate drought tolerance when mature. Requires regular watering during dry spells in the first growing season.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Plant in spring or autumn to give roots time to establish in mild conditions.

Spacing:
Space plants 90 cm to 1.2 metres (3–4 feet) apart if used for groundcover or mass planting. Closer spacing for hedges or formal edging.

Watering:
Water regularly during establishment. Once mature, water during prolonged dry periods. Avoid overwatering, especially in poorly drained soils.

Fertilization:
Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to encourage lush growth. Fertilize lightly—excess nutrients may reduce foliage variegation.

Mulching:
Mulch around the base with compost or bark to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect roots in colder climates.

Pruning:
Prune in late winter or early spring to control shape and encourage bushiness. Responds well to trimming. Can be used as a topiary or clipped hedge.

Propagation:
Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings in summer. Can also root naturally where stems touch the ground.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
New foliage emerges with creamy-white margins and green centres; adds a fresh, bright accent to spring gardens.

Summer:
Evergreen foliage remains dense and decorative; compact mounding habit adds structure and texture to plantings.

Autumn:
In colder weather, foliage may develop subtle pink or purple tints, enhancing its ornamental appeal.

Winter:
Evergreen with persistent variegated leaves, providing winter interest and structure. A reliable year-round feature in borders and mixed plantings.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Provides shelter for insects and small birds. Not a significant source of nectar or pollen but contributes to habitat diversity.

Garden Use:
Ideal for groundcover, borders, slopes, low hedges, and containers. Useful as a climbing or trailing evergreen when trained against a wall. Suitable for coastal, urban, and wildlife gardens. Deer-resistant and tolerant of pollution.

Companion Plants:
Pairs well with hellebores, heucheras, boxwood, ferns, ornamental grasses, and spring bulbs. Contrasts nicely with darker-leaved evergreens and flowering shrubs.
