  • Low growing hedge
  • Excellent foliage
  • Evergreen

Growing Conditions

Light:
Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Best foliage coloration (bright gold margins with green centres) occurs in full sun. Too much shade can dull leaf variegation.

Soil:
Tolerates a variety of well-drained soils—loamy, sandy, or clay-based. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH but is adaptable to slightly alkaline soils.

Exposure:
Performs well in both sheltered and exposed positions. Wind-tolerant once mature. Tolerates urban conditions, salt spray, and light foot traffic.

Drought Tolerance:
Moderate once established. Needs regular watering during prolonged dry periods, especially in the first growing season.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Ideal planting is in spring or autumn to allow roots to establish before extreme temperatures.

Spacing:
Space plants 60–90 cm (2–3 feet) apart if used as groundcover or informal hedging; closer spacing for dense planting.

Watering:
Regular watering needed until established. Afterward, water during extended dry periods or in hot climates.

Fertilization:
Light feeding with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring promotes growth and vivid foliage. Avoid overfertilizing, which can encourage weak, leggy growth.

Mulching:
Apply a 5 cm (2-inch) layer of bark mulch or compost to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, especially in the first year.

Pruning:
Trim in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and control size. Tolerant of heavy pruning; can be clipped into topiary or hedge forms.

Propagation:
Easily propagated via semi-hardwood cuttings in late summer. May also root where stems touch the ground.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Bright yellow and green variegated foliage emerges; attractive compact habit brings cheerful colour to spring beds and borders.

Summer:
Foliage remains vibrant and dense; forms a neat, mounding shape. Makes an excellent contrast plant.

Autumn:
Cooler temperatures may bring a rosy-pink blush to the golden leaf margins, adding extra seasonal colour.

Winter:
Evergreen in most climates; maintains its variegated foliage, offering strong visual interest and structure through winter months.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Provides shelter for small animals and insects. Inconspicuous flowers may attract occasional pollinators, but it's not a primary nectar source.

Garden Use:
Popular for borders, foundation plantings, groundcovers, containers, or low hedging. Excellent choice for coastal gardens, urban landscapes, and formal or informal designs. Deer and rabbit resistant.

Companion Plants:
Looks great with lavender, boxwood, dwarf conifers, coral bells (Heuchera), ornamental grasses, or flowering perennials like salvia or coreopsis for contrast.
