Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to light shade. Performs best in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In partial shade, flowering may be reduced but still reliable. Too much shade can lead to leggy growth.
Soil:
Well-drained soil. Prefers moderately fertile, sandy or loamy soil. Tolerates a wide range of soil types, including poor soils, as long as drainage is good. Thrives in slightly acidic to neutral pH. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils.
Exposure:
Suits both exposed and sheltered positions. Hardy. Handles wind and temperature fluctuations well once established.
Drought Tolerance:
High. Very drought-tolerant once established, making it ideal for dry gardens or xeriscaping. However, performs best with occasional watering during extended dry periods.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn. Planting in spring gives roots time to establish before winter.
Spacing:
Space plants 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart. Mature height is 40–60 cm (16–24 inches) with a spread of about 30 cm (12 inches), forming clumps of narrow, lance-shaped foliage.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, water sparingly. Fertilizer is rarely needed—an annual mulch or compost application in spring is usually sufficient.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Deadhead regularly to extend blooming season. Shear back after flowering in late summer to encourage a neat habit and possible reblooming. Cut back to basal foliage in autumn.
Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring or early autumn. Easy to divide and replant. Can also self-seed in favourable conditions but is not invasive.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Forms neat mounds of green, lance-shaped foliage. New basal growth is tidy and fresh.
Summer:
Main flowering period is from June to August. Produces masses of daisy-like flowers in shades of lavender-blue with yellow centres. Blooms create a soft, airy effect and attract pollinators.
Autumn:
Late blooms may persist into early autumn if regularly deadheaded. Foliage begins to decline as temperatures drop.
Winter:
Dies back to the ground. Dormant over winter but hardy and reliable for regrowth in spring. Old stems can be cut back in late autumn or left for some structural interest.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Offers nectar throughout summer. Seed heads may also be visited by birds.
Garden Use:
Ideal for cottage gardens, rock gardens, dry borders, and wildlife-friendly plantings. Also suitable for coastal gardens and gravel beds. Works well in mixed perennial borders or as ground cover in sunny spots. Performs nicely in containers with good drainage.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with Coreopsis, Echinacea, Salvia, Gaillardia, Achillea, and ornamental grasses. Complements drought-tolerant Mediterranean or prairie-style plantings.
