Growing Conditions

Light:
Partial shade to full shade. Thrives in dappled woodland light or deep shade. Tolerates some morning sun if soil remains moist, but too much direct sun can scorch foliage.

Soil:
Moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Prefers loamy or sandy soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Will tolerate dry shade once established, though it performs best in moist conditions with plenty of organic matter.

Exposure:
Ideal for sheltered spots, such as under trees or in woodland gardens. Hardy in the UK, tolerating winter temperatures down to around -15°C (5°F). Mulch helps protect in colder areas.

Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Once established, it copes well with dry shade, especially under deciduous trees. However, best foliage and flowering occur with consistent moisture.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Best planted in spring or early autumn when soil moisture is adequate, and temperatures are mild. This encourages strong root establishment.

Spacing:
Space 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart. Forms a slowly spreading clump 25–30 cm (10–12 inches) tall, eventually making a low-maintenance groundcover.

Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly in the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. After that, water during prolonged dry periods. Fertilize lightly in early spring with compost or a general-purpose, balanced feed.

Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring with compost or leaf mould to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Cut back old, tattered foliage in late winter or early spring—just before new flower spikes and fresh leaves emerge.

Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring or early autumn. Lift clumps and separate the rhizomes, replanting immediately. It can also be grown from seed, but this is slower and may not come true to type.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Produces charming, nodding red and pink flowers with yellow centres, held above the foliage on wiry stems. One of the earliest perennials to bloom, often flowering in March–April. Fresh, heart-shaped leaves emerge bronze or red-tinged.

Summer:
Foliage matures to lush green, forming a dense, weed-suppressing mat. Offers attractive groundcover throughout the warmer months.

Autumn:
Leaves may take on red or bronze tints in autumn, adding subtle seasonal colour.

Winter:
Semi-evergreen. In milder areas, foliage may persist and provide winter cover. In colder climates, it may die back, though the plant remains hardy and will regrow in spring.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Flowers attract early pollinators like bees. The dense foliage provides shelter for ground-dwelling insects and small wildlife.

Garden Use:
Perfect for dry shade, underplanting trees or shrubs, woodland gardens, or shady borders. Also suitable for containers in shaded areas. Useful as a groundcover beneath larger plants or in difficult shaded spots.

Companion Plants:
Pairs beautifully with Ferns, Hostas, Pulmonaria, Tiarella, Brunnera, Heuchera, and Spring-flowering bulbs like Snowdrops and Cyclamen. The reddish tones of the flowers and young foliage create a striking contrast with silver or blue-leaved companions.
