Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun. Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal flowering.
Soil:
Well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Prefers loamy or sandy soils with neutral to slightly acidic pH. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils.
Exposure:
Performs best in open, sunny borders. Hardy, tolerating cold winters once established. In colder climates, top growth may die back completely but regrows from roots in spring.
Drought Tolerance:
High. Very drought-tolerant once established. Occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods improves overall performance and flowering.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in spring after the last frost, or in early autumn in milder regions to allow root development before winter.
Spacing:
Space 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart. Grows in compact clumps reaching about 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) in height and spread.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. After establishment, water only during extended dry spells. Apply a light, balanced fertilizer in early spring; avoid over-fertilization, which can lead to leggy growth.
Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Deadhead spent blooms regularly to encourage continuous flowering. Cut back by half in midsummer to rejuvenate the plant and extend blooming. In autumn, cut to the ground once flowering finishes or leave seed heads for winter interest and wildlife.
Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring or by seed. 'Double the Sun' may not come true from seed, so division is preferred for maintaining cultivar characteristics.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Fresh green foliage emerges early in the season. Early buds may appear in late spring, especially in warm regions.
Summer:
Golden-yellow, semi-double daisy-like flowers bloom profusely from early summer through to early autumn. Long flowering season with regular deadheading.
Autumn:
Blooming may continue into early autumn with proper care. Foliage may take on slight bronzing before dormancy.
Winter:
Deciduous. Dies back to the ground. In colder zones, mulch crowns in late autumn for winter protection.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Birds may feed on seeds if left on the plant through winter.
Garden Use:
Perfect for sunny borders, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, and container planting. Also well-suited for drought-tolerant or low-maintenance garden designs. Makes an excellent cut flower.
Companion Plants:
Pairs beautifully with Salvia, Echinacea, Rudbeckia, Gaillardia, Lavender, and ornamental grasses. Its golden blooms provide a strong contrast to purples, blues, and burgundy-foliaged plants.
