Growing Conditions

Light:
Full sun. Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for best flower production and strong, upright growth. In partial shade, plants may become leggy and flowers sparse.

Soil:
Well-drained soil. Prefers sandy or loamy soils but tolerates poor, dry, or rocky soils well. Avoid heavy clay or poorly drained soils, which can cause root rot. Performs best in slightly alkaline to neutral pH.

Exposure:
Tolerates both sheltered and exposed locations. Very hardy (USDA zones 3–9 / UK H7), making it suitable for a wide range of climates and garden settings.

Drought Tolerance:
High. Exceptionally drought-tolerant once established. Requires minimal watering and thrives in dry, sunny borders or gravel gardens.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Plant in spring or autumn when soil is workable and temperatures are mild. Spring planting allows more time for root establishment before winter.

Spacing:
Space 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart. Grows up to 90–120 cm (3–4 feet) tall with a similar spread, forming upright clumps with fern-like foliage.

Watering & Fertilization:
Water during prolonged drought, especially in the first season. Once established, minimal watering is needed. Over-fertilizing can cause floppy growth—use a low-nitrogen fertilizer sparingly in early spring if needed.

Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch lightly in spring to suppress weeds and retain moisture. Deadhead spent flower clusters regularly to extend blooming. Cut back to the base in late autumn or early spring to rejuvenate growth.

Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring or autumn every 3–4 years to maintain vigour. Can also be grown from seed or by softwood cuttings in spring.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Ferny, aromatic, grey-green foliage emerges, forming a dense clump. Flower stems begin to rise in late spring.

Summer:
Large, flat-topped golden-yellow flower heads bloom from June through August. These bold blooms are long-lasting and excellent for both fresh and dried arrangements.

Autumn:
Faded flower heads can be left for structure and seed interest. Foliage remains attractive until frost.

Winter:
Deciduous. Dried seed heads and stems can be left over winter for architectural interest and wildlife habitat, then cut back in early spring.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Dried seed heads may provide food or shelter for overwintering insects.

Garden Use:
Ideal for sunny borders, prairie-style plantings, gravel gardens, and wildlife gardens. Also excellent for cutting gardens and dried flower arrangements. Its height and bold colour make it a great back-of-border accent.

Companion Plants:
Pairs well with ornamental grasses, Echinacea, Rudbeckia, Salvia, Nepeta, and Lavender. The golden-yellow blooms contrast beautifully with purples, blues, and silvers, creating a vibrant summer palette.
