Why plant perennials in autumn?

Spring is traditionally seen as the main planting season, but autumn has a lot going for it. The soil is still holding warmth from summer, while cooler air and autumn rainfall create excellent conditions for plants to establish. Rather than putting all their energy into producing flowers and foliage, newly planted perennials can concentrate on developing their root systems. That means when spring arrives, your plants are already settled into the garden and ready to get growing.

At Thompson's we recommend autumn as one of the best times to plant hardy perennials, particularly when the soil is moist and not waterlogged or frozen.

Plant now. Enjoy more next year

This is where our £4.49, 9cm perennials offer particularly good value. When you see a small perennial in a 9cm pot, it can be tempting to think that you need to buy a much larger plant to make an immediate impact. But remember: you aren't buying the plant for how big it is today – you're buying it for what it can become. Plant a small perennial in autumn and give it time to establish its roots before winter. Come spring, it can get away to a strong start, putting on new growth and developing into a much fuller plant during the growing season. In other words, a £4.49 plant today could be the start of a much bigger, more established perennial in your garden next year. It's a simple way to create a beautiful garden while keeping an eye on the budget.

Small plants. Big potential

Perennials are naturally excellent value because, unlike annual bedding plants, they can return year after year. Many herbaceous perennials die back during the winter but survive below ground, ready to emerge again in spring. Others are evergreen or semi-evergreen and can provide interest throughout the year. So instead of buying a garden full of mature plants in one go, why not plant smaller perennials now and let nature do some of the growing for you? Give them the right position, prepare the soil well, water them in and allow them time to establish. With the right care, they'll reward you with more growth and flowers in the seasons ahead.

Plan ahead for next spring

One of the best things about autumn planting is that you're getting ahead of the gardening season. Spring can be a busy time in the garden. There's sowing, pruning, tidying, mowing and plenty of other jobs competing for your attention. By planting your perennials in autumn, you can start creating next year's garden before winter even arrives. Think about the gaps in your borders now:

  • Is there an empty space that needs filling?
  • Could you add more colour to a tired-looking border?
  • Do you need plants for a shady area?
  • Could your garden benefit from more pollinator-friendly flowers?
  • Are there gaps between existing shrubs and larger perennials?
  • Would repeating groups of the same plant create a stronger effect?

Autumn is a great time to make those plans and start planting. Plant now, establish over winter and look forward to a fuller garden next spring.
