Growing Conditions
Light:
Full sun to partial shade. Performs best with at least 6 hours of sunlight daily. Tolerates partial shade well and continues to flower reliably even with some shelter, making it suitable for a range of light conditions.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Prefers loamy or sandy soils with neutral to slightly acidic pH. Avoid heavy clay or poorly draining soil, which can lead to root rot or poor vigour.
Exposure:
Ideal for sunny or lightly shaded walls, fences, pergolas, or trellises. Appreciates a sheltered site away from strong, drying winds. Mulch around the base or grow low groundcovers to keep roots cool and moist in summer.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate. Requires regular watering during prolonged dry periods, particularly in the first year. Once established, tolerates occasional drought but performs best with consistent soil moisture during active growth and flowering.
Cultivation & Care
Planting Time:
Plant in early spring or autumn when the soil is workable and temperatures are mild. Autumn planting allows roots to establish before winter dormancy.
Spacing:
Space 1.2–1.5 m (4–5 ft) apart from other climbers or shrubs. Grows 3–4.5 m (10–15 ft) tall when supported, making it excellent for vertical coverage.
Watering & Fertilization:
Water deeply during dry spells, especially in the first two growing seasons. Feed in early spring with a general-purpose or high-potash fertilizer to encourage flower production. A second light feed after the main flowering period may promote extended blooming.
Mulching & Pruning:
Apply organic mulch in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Pruning Group 3:
Cut all stems back to 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) above ground level in late winter or early spring (February–March). This stimulates vigorous new shoots that will flower in the same season.
Propagation:
Propagate by softwood or semi-ripe cuttings in late spring to summer, or by layering in early summer. Named cultivars like ‘Halliana Bembridge’ should be propagated vegetatively to preserve flower and growth characteristics.
Seasonal Interest
Spring:
Vigorous new shoots and soft green foliage emerge. Fast growth begins in mid to late spring as temperatures rise.
Summer:
Produces abundant, fragrant tubular flowers in shades of creamy white and soft yellow, often flushed with pink, from June to August. Sweet scent fills the air, especially in warm weather.
Autumn:
Flowering may continue into early autumn depending on conditions. Foliage may remain green or turn yellow before dropping.
Winter:
Deciduous. Plant dies back to woody stems. Prune back hard before spring growth resumes as part of Group 3 maintenance.
Wildlife & Garden Use
Wildlife:
Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators due to its strong fragrance and nectar-rich flowers. Dense summer foliage may provide temporary cover for birds and insects.
Garden Use:
Ideal for training on pergolas, fences, trellises, arches, or obelisks. Adds long-lasting fragrance and romantic appeal to cottage, wildlife, or informal garden designs. Can also be grown through open shrubs or small trees and pairs well with climbing roses or clematis for extended seasonal interest.
