Growing Conditions

Light:
Full sun is ideal. Needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to flower continuously. Tolerates light shade but flowering may be reduced.

Soil:
Well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Prefers alkaline to neutral pH but is adaptable. Performs well in sandy or loamy soils. Avoid heavy clay or poorly draining conditions, especially in winter.

Exposure:
Best grown in a sheltered position, protected from cold, drying winds. Hardy in milder parts of the UK, but may suffer in very cold, wet winters. In colder regions, grow near a wall or in containers for protection.

Drought Tolerance:
High once established. Tolerates dry conditions well, making it ideal for gravel gardens or low-maintenance borders. Requires good drainage to prevent root rot.

Cultivation & Care

Planting Time:
Plant in spring or early autumn to allow roots to establish before summer heat or winter chill.

Spacing:
Space 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart. Grows into a bushy clump up to 75 cm (30 inches) tall and wide.

Watering & Fertilization:
Water regularly during establishment. Once mature, water only during prolonged dry spells. Apply a light general-purpose feed in early spring to encourage blooming, but avoid overfeeding which can reduce flower longevity.

Mulching & Pruning:
Mulch in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch away from the base of stems. Deadhead spent flowers regularly to prolong blooming. Lightly trim after flowering to maintain shape. Avoid hard pruning into old wood as this may not regrow.

Propagation:
Best propagated by semi-ripe cuttings in summer. Seeds may not come true to type. Replace plants every 2–3 years as they can become woody and less floriferous over time.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
Begins blooming early in spring with masses of mauve-purple flowers on upright spikes. Provides vibrant colour when few other plants are in flower.

Summer:
Continuous flowering through summer if deadheaded. Attractive grey-green evergreen foliage offers year-round structure and contrast.

Autumn:
May continue flowering into early autumn. Foliage remains attractive as temperatures cool.

Winter:
Evergreen. Keeps its foliage throughout winter in mild climates, adding colour and texture to the garden even when not in bloom.

Wildlife & Garden Use

Wildlife:
Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Excellent nectar source over a long flowering period. A great choice for wildlife-friendly planting.

Garden Use:
Ideal for sunny borders, cottage gardens, gravel gardens, containers, and wall-side borders. Provides colour continuity between spring and summer displays. Often used to soften hard edges or add vertical accents in mixed plantings.

Companion Plants:
Combines well with Lavender, Salvia, Nepeta, Achillea, Euphorbia, Sedum (Hylotelephium), and silver-leaved plants like Stachys byzantina. Contrasts beautifully with yellow, white, or pale pink blooms.
