    Crassula

Crassula, often known as the Jade Plant, is a hardy succulent with thick, fleshy leaves. It's an excellent choice for anyone looking for a relatively low-maintenance houseplant.

    Where to position

Choose a bright, sunny position. A south- or west-facing windowsill can work particularly well.

    Watering

    • Crassula stores water in its leaves, so it doesn't need frequent watering.
    • Allow the compost to dry out thoroughly.
    • Water well when it is dry.
    • Allow excess water to drain away.
    • Water much less during winter.

    Temperature & humidity

Normal household temperatures are suitable. Keep away from cold draughts and frost.

It doesn't need high humidity and is usually perfectly happy with normal household conditions.

    Feeding & repotting

Feed occasionally during spring and summer with a succulent or houseplant feed.

Repot when necessary using a free-draining succulent compost.

    Common problems

    Soft or yellowing leaves
    Usually a sign of overwatering.

    Leaves dropping
Can be caused by overwatering, underwatering or sudden changes in conditions.

    Leggy growth
Usually means the plant needs more light.

    Top tips

    • Let it dry out: Don't water just because the compost looks dry on the surface—check deeper into the pot.
    • Give it plenty of light: Good light encourages strong, compact growth.
    • Drainage is essential: Never leave the pot standing in water.

    Pet & child safety

Crassula/Jade Plants can be harmful if eaten by pets, so keep them out of reach.
