    ZZ Plant

The ZZ Plant is a tough, attractive houseplant with glossy green leaves. It's particularly well suited to busy households and is very forgiving if you occasionally forget to water it.

    Where to position

Choose a bright position with indirect light, although the ZZ Plant can tolerate lower-light areas.

    Avoid strong, prolonged direct sunlight.

    Watering

ZZ Plants store water in their underground rhizomes, so they prefer to dry out between waterings.

    • Allow the compost to dry thoroughly.
    • Water well when dry.
    • Allow excess water to drain away.
    • Water much less during winter.

    Temperature & humidity

Normal household temperatures are ideal. ZZ Plants don't need high humidity and are happy in typical indoor conditions.

Keep away from cold draughts and frost.

    Feeding & repotting

Feed occasionally during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant feed.

Repot when the plant becomes root-bound, using a well-draining houseplant compost.

    Common problems

    Yellowing leaves
Usually caused by too much water. Check the compost and drainage.

    Soft stems or leaves
    Often a sign of overwatering.

    Slow growth
ZZ Plants naturally grow slowly, particularly in lower light. Moving it somewhere brighter can encourage growth.

    Top tips

    • Don't overwater: Let the compost dry thoroughly before watering again.
    • It tolerates low light: Making it a useful choice for less-bright rooms.
    • Be patient: ZZ Plants are naturally slow growers.

    Pet & child safety

ZZ Plants can be harmful if eaten, so keep them away from pets and young children.
