Strelitzia (Bird of Paradise)
Strelitzia, commonly known as the Bird of Paradise, is a striking tropical houseplant with large, banana-like leaves. It makes a fantastic statement plant and can grow into an impressive feature indoors when given plenty of light.
Where to position
Choose a bright position with plenty of indirect light. Strelitzia enjoys lots of light and can tolerate some gentle direct sunlight.
A bright spot near a south- or west-facing window can work well, but protect the leaves from very strong midday sun, particularly behind glass.
Watering
- Allow the top of the compost to dry out slightly between waterings.
- Check the compost before watering.
- Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away.
- Don't leave the plant sitting in water.
- Reduce watering during autumn and winter when growth slows.
Top watering tip: Strelitzia prefers a good drink followed by a slight drying-out period rather than constantly wet compost.
Temperature & humidity
Strelitzia prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity.
Keep away from cold draughts and radiators. It appreciates extra humidity during dry indoor conditions, particularly in centrally heated homes.
Feeding & repotting
Feed every few weeks during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant feed to support healthy growth.
Repot when the roots become crowded, using a good-quality, free-draining houseplant compost. Strelitzia can become quite root-bound before it needs repotting.
Common problems
Brown or split leaves
Leaf splitting is natural for mature Strelitzia and helps the plant cope with air movement. Brown edges can also be caused by dry air, underwatering or too much direct sun.
Yellow leaves
Often caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Check the compost before watering and make sure excess water can drain away.
Drooping leaves
May indicate underwatering, overwatering or insufficient light.
Slow growth
Usually associated with low light, particularly during the darker winter months. Move to a brighter position if possible.
Top tips
- Give it plenty of light: Strelitzia is a light-loving plant and needs good light for strong growth.
- Don't overwater: Allow the top of the compost to dry slightly between waterings.
- Give it space: Mature plants can become large, so allow plenty of room for the leaves to spread.
- Wipe the leaves occasionally to remove dust and help keep the large foliage looking fresh.
- Don't worry about splits: Naturally split leaves are part of the plant's normal growth.
Pet & child safety
Strelitzia is considered toxic if eaten, so keep it away from pets and children and discourage chewing on the leaves.
