Sansevieria
Sansevieria, also known as Snake Plant or Mother-in-Law's Tongue, is one of the easiest houseplants to care for. Its upright leaves make it particularly useful for adding structure to a room.
Where to position
It prefers bright, indirect light, but is remarkably tolerant of lower-light positions.
Avoid prolonged strong direct sunlight.
Watering
- Sansevieria likes to dry out thoroughly between waterings.
- Check that the compost is dry before watering.
- Water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain.
- Water very sparingly during winter.
- Never leave the plant standing in water.
Temperature & humidity
Normal household temperatures are ideal. It doesn't require high humidity.
Keep away from cold draughts and frost.
Feeding & repotting
Feed occasionally during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant or succulent feed.
Repot only when necessary, as Sansevieria is happy being slightly root-bound. Use a free-draining compost.
Common problems
Soft or mushy leaves
Usually caused by overwatering.
Yellowing leaves
Check the watering routine and drainage.
Leaning leaves
The plant may need more light or support, or the roots may be struggling in overly wet compost.
Top tips
- Water less: Overwatering is the biggest risk.
- It tolerates low light: Although brighter light usually gives stronger growth.
- Don't over-pot: Sansevieria generally prefers a snug pot.
Pet & child safety
Sansevieria can be harmful if eaten by cats and dogs, so keep it away from pets.
